[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came out to play and now as I wonder Hello there all you ex-pad wannabes. I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here. So let's get started The other day a gringle buddy of mine pointed out an interesting fact. He said Johnny Newbie gringo is an expat even long-term expats are always looking to change homes or change apartments We're talking about down here in Latin America. Seems like no one ends up living in the same place forever
[00:49] He said and he was right a lot of it moving that is his hit and miss However, he said it's an easy way to gauge the kind of neighborhood You're looking at whether you're thinking of moving to a new district or a gated guarded community, whatever He said what I discovered in my eight years down here after moving four times Is that it's a sure bet the more noise there is in a neighborhood, you know more street noise, etc The lower class of people living in that neighborhood and the cheaper the rents gonna be So if you're looking for cheap rent go for the noisy neighborhood and I thought you know, mr. D. You're right. It seems like all the upper class and high-end neighborhoods do not allow chicken buses to drive through No dogs parking either nor public transportation
[01:34] I don't know how they pull that off how they keep out the chicken buses and public transportation that is because there's basically no zoning laws Oh, they have my right, but they're very poorly enforced. Sometimes not at all Anyway, the nicer higher class neighborhoods are very quiet There are no roosters crowing at four in the morning No little guys and push car chilling aguacate aguacate at seven in the morning No, Rottweilers posted on second-story roofs barking at all hours. There are no stereos blasting and horns beeping So there you have it. It's a very easy way For example, if you're on a very low rent budget To find the kind of neighborhood where you pay 150 to 200 bucks a month for an apartment Yep, there's apartments like that all over Latin America and even in nice safe places though
[02:24] you'll have to put up with the street noise and Of course, you'll have to put up with the way it looks outside of your building with the garbage strewn around the streets That's the other thing the nicer higher-class neighborhoods are very clean and nicely groomed which means two things They've got more frequent garbage pickup and the people living there actually have a place They put their garbage a thing called a garbage can yep. That's right in the lower-class neighborhoods It's a cheap rent neighborhoods. You'll see people toss their garbage bags out in the street against trees Curbside and empty lots in the gutters. Yep. It's pretty revolting All right, but hey low rent neighborhoods breed low rent habits and inevitably it doesn't take long for the street dogs to get into it So that's what you're gonna get if you live in a low-class low rent neighborhood
[03:12] Oddly enough though those packs of street dogs you'll see in low rent neighborhoods But almost never in upper middle class and high rent neighborhoods mostly because in high rent neighborhoods people protect their garbage Sometimes even placing it in a cement lockup on the edge of the street and you'll have to get a key to get into it Not so at all in low rent districts in fact every block or two you can bet there's gonna be a pile of garbage that's been sitting there a while and Man, I have to say I've got a lot of sympathy for garbage men here in Latin America, man It might just be the worst job in the world Except maybe scraping down nuclear power plant cooling towers Don't laugh. Someone's got to do it. It's a real job and a terrible one
[03:58] I know a guy who did that during his summer breaks from college Of course the dough for a college kid was fantastic Why do you think he was getting five times more than I got at the Chicago Street Department working on the dead dog crew? Which was also one of the worst despicable jobs you could have but hey, you're a college kid Your parents have six kids and no dough. So you do it and put up with it Sure glad no one gave me that nuclear power plant scrubbing option You know when you're 20 years old going to college and you're broke man You take the summer job that pays the most dough because you know, no matter how bad the job sucks It's gonna be over in three months problem is later on I found out When that college kid I knew making all that dough got into his late 30s
[04:43] his dentist told me he had some very bad problems with his teeth and Get this his bones in general kind of problems. He never saw in a person that age Hmm, but I digress as usual anyway in talking about how much garbage you see around especially in poor neighborhoods And the way Latinos who who are mostly all litter bugs the Latino guys anyway I just don't get it the way they litter and out of the other corner of their mouth tell you how much they love Their country and how patriotic they are. It doesn't make sense. But like I said, it's mostly the guys You rarely see a lady littering. However on the positive side More and more public garbage and litter cans are showing up at tourist destinations and people are actually using them In fact in some of the tourists and non tourist destinations like beach fronts in small towns, etc
[05:33] The problem is not that there's not enough garbage cans or litter boxes. Did I say litter box? Well, that's what they are, right? The problem is the garbage men don't come around often enough to empty the things it seems everywhere you look They're jammed to the brim with empty soda cans and pizza boxes, etc Which means thankfully people are using them But the light-ass thieves in government have not yet developed an adequate plan to take care of the overflow So anyway, that is a positive sign that people are using the things you could say it's an awful late start But hey, you got to start somewhere So bottom line the cheaper the rent the noisier and dirtier the neighborhood come to think of it That seems to be the situation up in the states, too but as far as filth and
[06:20] Pollution you should be relieved to know that the list of the world's top most polluted cities is out and not a single city in Latin America has made the list turns out a brand new report by IQ air a Swiss company that tracks global air quality as Well as water and soil pollution, but particularly pollution that most damages human beings Namely find particulate pollution in the air the most damaging for human lungs Anyway, you should be relieved to know at least if you're an expat living in Latin America All but one of the world's top 20 most polluted cities were in Asia and that one outlier is in Africa Anyway, the majority of the most polluted cities 13 of them are in India Another four are in neighboring Pakistan with one in China and one in Kazakhstan
[07:10] Mmm, I bet only one and maybe 20 people can find Kazakh stand on the map Anyway, that one outlier the only city outside of Asia featured on the highest pollution list is najibina The capital of Chad in Central Africa Najibina That's n apostrophe DJ a emmy and a Good luck pronouncing that one. I can't Meanwhile back in the first world the cities with the worst pollution in North America were all in Guess where California which really doesn't make sense because California is the most regulated state in the Union Maybe even the most regulated place in the world now I don't know how many of you guys out there have a particulate meter like I have cost about 200 bucks Measures air quality. We spoke about it before on this show. Well as it turns out that
[08:00] Particularly dangerous fine particulate matter or PM 2.5 as it's called on the meter should not according to many Scientific studies and the World Health Organization, which is a corrupt piece of shit But still their studies are often quoted. Anyway that reading the PM 2.5 to be safe for humans should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter Well, according to this study of the top 20 most polluted cities Every one of them has a PM 2.5 level that exceeds 100 That's more than 20 times. What's considered safe for human beings. By the way, according to this article all 20 of the worst cities have pollution so bad everyone going outside is advised to wear a mask where we heard that before and
[08:49] Planes at the airport are prohibited from taking off Because at certain times of the day the pollution is so bad. It collects us a film on airplane engines and windshields Now here's the good news if you're considering living in Latin America or live there already only 12 countries regions and territories Recorded PM 2.5 concentrations below the safe 5 micrograms per cubic meter guidelines Turns out the safest cities for that kind of air pollution were in Latin America and the Caribbean By the way, they tested the air quality of more than 8,000 cities sadly, though only 17% of the 8,954 cities analyzed Recorded air quality levels which met or were below the pollution guideline
[09:38] Yet even when first world people are pulled They'll tell you they think the rest of the world is slowly but surely cleaning up its act. Well, it ain't so Alright, it's time to dig into the email pile. This one comes from Dean in Minnesota He hits on that ever so touchy subject of dating Latinas He says Johnny I'd like to know a little bit more about Latino women There aren't many here in my town in Minnesota at all. So I've got no way to judge I've only taken a few trips back and forth to Mexico Costa Rica and now Guatemala Just a few short fact-finding vacations that worked out fine However, I hadn't the time to engage in mating and dating down there, but next time I'm surely gonna
[10:26] That's one of my goals next trip down. He says all I really know about women It's through my sisters and the dates I've had here in Minnesota. I'm talking about American girls the only kinds of girls I know he says I've learned through several relationships that all women or American women are at least Bipolar some are tripolar then there are the quadpolar and the Quinn polar girls, too He says heck I was involved with one woman who was hector polar I want to know Johnny our latina ladies like that do they bounce on a dime from one? unpredictable personality to another Okay, wait a minute wait a minute Alright Dean, let's stop right here and try to assess that out. I'd say sure there are some psycho latinas down here
[11:12] You'll find them mostly on those dating sites. If you've been listening for a while You've heard me say those Latina dating sites are treacherous I'd say about 50% of the girls on those sites are out to gouge you to get your money and some of those girls aren't even Girls their call center scams for all you know You could be talking to someone at a Russian call center using artificial intelligence But I'd have to say if you meet a nice Latina girl who happens to be working at a bank or a ice cream shop Sales lady university student whatever you meet her face to face in a normal way You have to remember most all of them have been carrying around some man baggage Starting with an absentee father a dad who cheated on her mom Most all have been lied to and cheated on by Latino guys in some way or other and many repeatedly
[11:59] It's a tragedy to see but the whole society is sort of corrupt in that way That's why most latinas have very low opinions of Latino men Consequently, they're just looking for a nice stable steady guy And by the way, most of them never find that guy because Latino men comprise 95% or more of the dating pool That's part and parcel of your gringo advantage and why so many of us gringos and expats even with our Peculiarities and defects look great compared to Latinos. By the way a while back I was talking to a couple of latinas and I asked him outright What's it about us gringos and expats that make you believe we're the top of the heap? Aside from the money thing that can give you a leg up in life Well, one of the girls instantly chimed in and said gringos are much more loyal to a girl and won't abandon her when the chips
[12:46] Are down like for example my cousin. She said she got knocked up by her boyfriend when she was 18 and he was 18 She's in her late 20s now and the kids five or six years old and the dad takes absolutely no Responsibility and doesn't support the kid at all. That's just so normal down here. She said Whereas all the rumors I've heard about gringos and expats if they get a girl pregnant They stand by her they take the responsibility and support the kid. Then I said, how do you know that? She said there's always someone who knows someone or who's related to someone who's been in that situation and the gringo always does his fair share Something that almost never happens with a latino guy. So anyway back to Dean I'd say latinas do have that reputation of being quite fiery and jealous man
[13:33] You gotta watch out for that But as far as being bipolar or tripolar in the true sense of the word I'd say that's not normally the case because once they are with a guy who they love and they trust they really aim to please They're very nurturing. They're not into fighting or playing mind games Oh, and here's something else about Latin American women. Most of the time. It's the women who manage family finances Like I said, a lot of Latino guys are borderline bankrupt. They drink they party They booze it up. They're just terrible with money and a lot of them like to gamble and because someone has to wear the pants Take the responsibility It's the women who step in and take care of everything all the household chores the kids the finances Etc or the kids won't eat or the rent won't get paid
[14:19] So anyway Dean in Minnesota says everything he learned about women came from his three sisters and the dates and relationships He's had with the strictly gringo women He says Johnny one thing I learned about women through my three sisters is number one How expensive it is to look like you're not wearing any makeup at all and are just casually beautiful all the time Number two Dean says he's amazed how much toilet paper they go through ladies You are tiny dainty you eat small amounts of food yet. You clog the toilet at least once a week He says when I was living in the house with my three sisters. They went through toilet paper so fast I thought they were lighting it on fire and when I confronted them about it He says one of my sisters said our plumbing is different than yours. We have nothing to shake therefore. We need more toilet paper
[15:08] Hmm picture that oh and Johnny. Here's another important lesson. I learned from my sisters when women say no it means no When they say maybe it means no when they say yes, but later that also means no now don't get me wrong Johnny I'm not moving to Latin America because I've had trouble with dates and relationships here in Minnesota I've never had much trouble finding a beautiful girl to date It just seems in time all my relationships kind of just fell apart. I'm hoping to do better in Latin America Hmm well Dean I don't really know what kind of advice you're looking for most guys when they first come down here to Latin America and They start dating after never having gone out with a Latina before well most of them I have to say make the big mistake of settling in a relationship with the very first Latina that pays them any mind
[15:58] It always seems to be the same story. They say Johnny, man. I hit the jackpot. I hit the lottery with this one She treats me like a king. She treats me like no American woman has ever treated me. She's warm She's tender even public displays of affection which would never happen with me and a girl up in the States My Latina girlfriend actually initiates PDFs But wait, I say wait, that's just the way Latinas are all of them have those characteristics So seriously, you want to be in gonna be gringo expats. Don't be thinking you hit the jackpot on the first try Hey, I was stupid like that when I first came down I got serious with one of the first girls I hooked up with way too fast now. She wasn't too faced She wasn't bipolar. It just took a while to find out we didn't have much in common
[16:45] You could say her motor wasn't running at the same speed that mine was but man I have to admit she treated me like gold and you think back to the Relationships you had back in the states and you say wow No one ever treated me this nice before this warm this kindly this touchy feely before man You'll never know what it's like to be number one till you come down here to Latin America and start dating and all the while You're thinking I don't want to lose this one man. I won the lottery. Well, guess what you didn't you just got a taste of How most all latinas treat their boyfriends? Oh, and let me tell you about another thing that happens in a Latino household Latino guys are not handy So when you go into a house, there'll be a broken light switch here and there some burnt out light bulbs a
[17:31] Cracked window a hole in the fence wires hanging out of a light socket and guess what? You'll never hear a Latina nagging her man to fix it mostly because Latino guys either don't know how to fix things or they just somehow let entropy take its course and let things Degenerate in their own natural way. What I'm saying is I don't hear latinas nag their husbands and boyfriends to do stuff around the house When the garbage gets too full guess what she doesn't nag the guy to take it out. She does it herself When there's no agua pura around the house, you know people buy those five gallon jugs of water You know those plastic jugs full of plastic nanoparticles Well when the so-called drinking water runs out in the house You won't hear a Latina bitching at her boyfriend or a husband to go out and get some
[18:17] She'll go down to the corner store and get some latinas have the motor in the family. There are the doers It is quite interesting to see she'll take care of the house Take care of the family do the cooking the shopping make sure the kids get off to school Okay, and if the guy chips in to do anything at all, it's a gift But things are changing the other day I was listening in on some older latinas some mothers and grandmas whose kids were out of the house and married They were grumbling. They were complaining about their daughters. They weren't lamenting that their daughters didn't know how to cook What I learned about in that little gripe session is that these ladies had failed their daughters or so They thought you see they grew up in a world where the woman did all the shopping and all the cooking from scratch
[19:04] Turns out the generation of latinas who are grandmas now or mothers with marriage eligible daughters When they were young and just getting started with their families, they never went to McDonald's or Pizza Hut They didn't buy Taco Bell or Dunkin donuts That stuff was around but too expensive. So they cooked from scratch always had something simmering on the stove Well, unfortunately times have really changed and young ladies today who just got married or are having kids Do not have the cooking skills their mothers had their mothers did not teach them something happened along the way and it sort of coincides To when smartphones hit the market down here now the real strange thing is is all these young latinas are hooked on tiktok and tiktok has Many ladies given out recipes and cooking up a storm
[19:51] But the young ladies at home watching these tiktok videos never seemed to give it a try When they're hungry, they open up a box of something or call delivery It seems like these days Latin Americans live for fast food and uber eats So that's what I've been hearing lately mothers and grandmothers complaining about the fact that their daughters do not know how to whip up a meal And they're very saddened by that. That's why if grandmas living in the house, which is often the case here in Latin America She's the cook the family cook and no one else can do it like her and the day she's gone The art of home cooking dies with her now I kind of think it's the same way up in the states young girls of marriage age have no idea how to cook a meal from scratch It's all takeout carryout or delivery though I think up in the states since people have so much extra spending money
[20:39] No one's complaining but down here in Latin America where money is tight Still people seem to be able to scrape up enough dough to get some junk food Speaking of complaints and grumbling. I'd like to say just a word or two about so-called influencers Aren't you sick to death of the term influencer? Isn't it crazy that everyone you see in the media seems to be an influencer these days and five years ago The word practically didn't even exist Influencer man, am I sick of that term and have you noticed suddenly all these young 20 and 30 something Tick-tock and only fans girls are dying off every day. It's a new young girl or guy I've never heard of but they seem to be famous in the media. They croak in a very untimely way Have you noticed that surely they're all triple Vaxxers, but that's never mentioned. Yep
[21:28] The woke media is alive and well. Anyway, have you noticed that all these recently dead? influencers have long glowing obituaries Question is how do you write an obituary on someone whose young life is a joke? Some mental midget who has done absolutely nothing constructive with his or her life except taking selfies in front of Ferraris They don't own have you noticed in those young people obituaries none have any real credentials or degrees or diplomas or talents Other than being filtered to look sexy on social media sites. Yep, and their obituaries all highlight them as Influencers in fact the word influencer shows up in the headlines like for example influencer found dead in five-star hotel jacuzzi
[22:15] influencer, huh influencing what What the fuck is an influencer? If you have 10 followers on insta crap, you're suddenly an influencer, right? So if I can walk my dog and stop at a fire hydrant course, you mean to taking a crap I guess I qualify as an animal Influencer I guess now all I need is a homemade porno tape and an enhanced butt Anyway, just thought I'd get that off my chest The question is am I an influencer if I am shoot me first, please. All right now a little controversy Well, you remember last week. I was talking about Assisted living options and nursing homes in Latin America. We went over quite a few things. Well Shortly after that show aired. I got a few emails from people
[23:03] Asking for more information about nurses and home care etc. And also came this email from Greg. He says Johnny and I'll paraphrase this a bit. He says Johnny the assisted living segment that you did was a weak report as There are ready available expat consults and a network and a list of well-established English-speaking accredited staff RN doctor nutritionists, etc Regarding nursing homes in patient care in Mexico He says there are private options and large domestic investor groups with multiple facilities Offering first-world style assisted living care as well as care for people with dementia Alzheimer's and memory problems then he gave me a list of links saying he's been following this sector since about 2008
[23:55] seeing more and more Extended care options opening up in Mexico. Well, Greg, thanks for the comment But as you know, I do not and never have recommended, Mexico To live work play and or do business. It's a completely corrupt narco state And though it's true since there are what over a million expats living in Mexico and most of them over 50 naturally Many are getting to be old and decrepit and past the point of no return They need assisted living options and because of the numbers, there's a big market for it but let me ask you this if the narcos are run in the country and They are and they're looking to gouge and extort the people with the highest amount of income, right? Guess who that demographic is gonna be gringos and expats and who are the easiest to extort?
[24:44] Decrepit gringos and expats who can't defend themselves Like for example a nice big group of them living in an assisted living facility Sure, they're great quality pretty much first world and damn cheap You could stay at a nice place for two thousand bucks a month cost you five times as much for an equivalent place up in the States too bad. They're in Mexico The problem is they only exist in Mexico and a couple of them in Colombia in the rest of Latin America It's as I mentioned in last week's show Assisted living facilities and most of the rest of Latin America. The other 18 countries are inadequate for gringos and expats So Greg when you say that my assisted living segment was a weak report Well, I left out Mexico on purpose because I never recommend any gringos and expats moving there
[25:30] And if you've been listening to my show for a while, you know Occasionally I throw in a few boots on the ground stories from people gringos and expats who've been living in Mexico for a long Time who by all accounts when they first got down thought it was more or less a paradise and now they're scared shitless and want out So let me ask you would you be comfortable with sending your friends and relatives to an assisted living facility in a narco state? Well, those prices don't seem to match up at all what the prices I'm finding in the rest of Latin America for example in those YouTube videos They were saying that a full-time person in your home to care for an elderly member of your family could cost two to three thousand Dollars a month that would be a live-in nurse or companion or a couple of live-in nurses or companions doing shifts
[27:04] Well, I don't know where they're getting their numbers from but down here south of south of the border. That's south of Mexico You heard me right when I said you could hire a live-in nurse or companion LPN whatever for $500 a month now, that's a fire cry from two to three thousand dollars a month. They're saying in that Mexican video Something's not making sense when it comes to full-time home care in Mexico.
