#1436 – Episode 1436: Cultural Nuances, Embarrassing Moments, and Expat Life in Latin America

Show #1436 · May 9, 2025

Johnny Mueller explores shame, social norms, and the challenges of expat life in Latin America

Episode Summary

In this episode of The Expat Files, Johnny Mueller explores the cultural concept of 'sin verguenza,' which translates to 'without shame' in Spanish. He explains that this phrase is commonly used in Latin America, often as an insult, implying that people in the region have little to no shame. Johnny contrasts this with the behavior of gringos and expats, who he claims carry more shame. He provides examples of how shame is handled differently in Latin America, such as the lack of stigma around deadbeat dads, multiple relationships, and even personal failures. Johnny also shares anecdotes about how people in Latin America openly discuss personal and family issues, unlike in the United States, where such topics are more private. He further illustrates this with examples of repairmen and painters who openly admit to making mistakes without shame, and motorcyclists who show no remorse for causing damage.

Johnny also discusses the cultural phenomenon of 'sin Breguenza,' where Latina women are often seen in tight, revealing clothing, and how this is perceived by expats. He highlights the contrast between the cultural norms of Latin America and the expectations of expats, especially gringos, who may find the behavior of Latina women surprising or even offensive. Johnny touches on the social dynamics within relationships, noting that Latina women may be more forgiving of a partner's shortcomings, such as being a deadbeat dad, compared to the United States. This leads to a discussion on the instability of romantic relationships in Latin America, which is attributed to cultural differences in how relationships are managed and maintained.

The podcast segment also discusses the challenges expats and gringos face in relationships with Latinas and Latinos. Johnny highlights that Latinas often struggle to cut off toxic exes, especially if they have children together. He notes that Latino men can easily re-enter their exes' lives, even if they are deadbeats, due to cultural norms around family reputation and embarrassment. Johnny contrasts the embarrassment culture between Latinos and gringos, noting that Latinos are less likely to share embarrassing stories, while gringos have more such stories. He shares a personal anecdote about a time when he was publicly embarrassed by a former contractor who had stiffed his brother, illustrating the cultural sensitivity around family reputation.

Johnny recounts a series of embarrassing and awkward situations he and others have faced, highlighting the social consequences of missteps and the difficulty of explaining oneself in such scenarios. He shares a story about being called an 'asshole thief' at a high-end restaurant due to a contractor issue, and how the situation escalated with people judging him. He also shares a high school prom story where a girl had toilet paper stuck to her dress, and a story about an engineering friend who was tricked by a girl during a date. Johnny reflects on how these moments can linger in memory, even decades later, and how people often avoid sharing such stories due to their embarrassment.

Finally, Johnny discusses his upcoming expat insider seminar in August 2025, highlighting that attendees can apply for permanent residency in Guatemala during the event by staying an extra seven days. He shares a testimonial from a seminar attendee, Mr. T, who moved to Guatemala permanently, sold his possessions, and is now living in a luxury condo. Mr. T credits the seminar and the support from the seminar team, including a concierge service, for helping him navigate the transition. He also mentions the positive change in his social interactions since becoming a permanent resident. Johnny encourages listeners to sign up for the seminar with an early bird discount and offers one-on-one consultations for those interested in plan B strategies.

[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came up to play and now I wonder Hello there all you ex-pad wannabes. I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here So let's get started. If you remember in a past show probably in a couple of past shows I mentioned the phrase sin Virgoenza, that's two words sin which means without in virgoenza shame without shame Now you might notice if you're down here in Latin America for any particular length of time

[00:48] You'll hear people use that phrase quite a bit sin virgoenza The only problem is Latinos use the phrase all the time Which would infer that there's a lot of people walking around who do have shame For this or that or the other thing for Gwenza means shame for Gwenza sin for Gwenza without shame Now, of course, if you don't know Spanish very well You probably won't pick up on the fact that it's an insult that people use all the time sin for Gwenza So if someone says that to you or looks at you and says it out loud, you've just been insulted Now what I've noticed after being down here so many years and observing these kinds of things I've noticed that gringos and expats carry around a lot more shame Than Latinas and Latinos ever do though. They may talk a good game about having shame

[01:33] It takes a whole hell of a lot for any Latina or Latino to admit it Latino others and latinas don't seem to feel too much shame about anything I mean look practically every Latino middle-class family has a kid living in the house with A single mother there are deadbeat dads everywhere In fact, they brag about being deadbeat dads to more than one kid sin for Gwenza. There's no shame to it at all It's a macho thing the more kids you have with different women the more macho points you accumulate now I know for single mothers living up in the States. There's less and less shame attached to it less and less stigma Not like in the old days anyway But still no one looks on it as a good thing or even a normal thing but down here in Latin America, man Deadbeat dads and guys getting caught having multiple affairs and even multiple families

[02:23] Everyone knows someone or has a family member in that position The question is do his friends and family shame him? Do they talk about him behind his back? Does he get locked out of family get-togethers and social invites? Nope. He's still good old Juanito There's no shame attached to it man have things changed I remember when I was a kid up in Chicago, man, there was a girl in our neighborhood good Catholic girl about my age I remember this summer when we turned 16. They shipped her off to Minnesota We were told she spent a year there as an exchange student Well found out some years later she went there because she got knocked up by a neighborhood kid There was so much shame involved They banished her for a year and the family lied about it or avoided talking about it forever though We all kind of knew oh and she never did come back with a baby. Apparently it went through an orphanage

[03:11] But down here in Latin America, man I'm talking about almost every single family's got a situation like that sin Breguenza down here in Latin America, what should be private and personal between people and family members often isn't in time Everyone seems to know their friends and family's dirty laundry Latinos don't keep secrets all that well, for example, and this has happened to me Suppose you call a repairman if you live down here, you're gonna do that a lot the washing machine breaks or is on the fritz I call the repair guy He fixes it or at least he says he fixes it and ends up coming back four different times And finally after replacing practically every expensive part it works and he's proud of the fact that he fixed it After four separate tries and he leaves with a smile on his face job

[03:57] Well done, so he thinks cuz he finally got it to work Like I said sin Breguenza, whereas if that happened up in the States, man If you're washing machine or dryer repair guy didn't get it right the first time man, you'd be all over his ass And yes, he'd come back and fix it right with some Breguenza Yeah, red-faced and all and that's if the guy missed on the first try and had to come back I'm talking about the fact that it's pretty common for a repair guy They have to come back to three even four times to fix something yet They're happy to do it and leave with smiles on their faces. They almost expect to get congratulated Oh and you've heard me say on this show many times you're better off paying your own house if you can because Professional painters as they call themselves down here will spatter the paint everywhere on your windows your doors your floors your light fixtures

[04:48] And of course, I'll almost never use a drop cloth or tape and those are supposed to be professionals yet When they're finished and report to you that they're done they're finished and They want to get paid and you do a little inspection and point out a few errors and a few spatters here and there They'll clean it up. All right with a smile sin Breguenza without a bit of shame No admitting their errors. No admitting. They did a half-assed job in the first place Oh, and how about my arch enemies the motorcyclists? Well, I've had my car scraped a few dozen times in my side view mirrors slammed and bashed By any number of careless weaving kooka-racha Motorcyclists and as you sit there in a traffic jam at a dead stop and they're squeezing through and hit your mirror

[05:34] Scratch the side of your door. They'll look at you and give you a shrug and a nice smile a Sort of sorry about that kind of grin again sin Breguenza. No shame Oh and this sin Breguenza thing just doesn't extend to Latino guys. It's the girls too, man every day You'll see some fat Latina girl walking down the street. Oftentimes Obesely huge latinas walking down the street wearing yoga pants, which they call Lycra down here Super tight two or three sizes way too small Cellulitis jelly rolls just busting out all over sin Breguenza. In fact, it's just the opposite They seem to wear that look with pride. Oh and to add insult to injury They're often wearing a top that it exposes a big round bouncing belly

[06:22] Intentionally revealing a belly button so dark and deep it could be mistaken for a black hole singularity Yep, you see latinas like that every day here in Latin America Bouncing along the street in the tightest of clothes and proud of it sin Breguenza No shame now, of course Gringo's an expats being Particularly observant about such things and particularly critical If you've got a few gringo expats together in a little group, let's say a coffee clutch Restaurant bar sit on a park bench, whatever it's rare that a gringo in the group won't mention it to the others on the sly Of course with a wink and a nudge someone might say oh god Have a look at that which is part of the funnel living down here in Latin America people watching man I love people watching and down here man There are just so many wild and crazy looks different people different colors different clothes different cultures

[07:12] The variety is never boring and never ending. By the way This is for you gringo guys and girls who have Latino boyfriends or girlfriends Have you noticed when you're walking down the street with your significant Latino or Latina other and you spot some odd looking creature? With yoga pants that are three sizes too small Have you noticed like I have if you spend maybe one or two seconds too long Staring at that creature your significant Latino other will say dissimilar dissimilar por favor Now there's a word you just have to remember dissimilar What it means is don't look don't stare act normal man I can't tell you how many hundreds of times in the years I've been down here in Latin America that someone usually a girlfriend will scold me with the word dissimilar Johnny

[08:03] Dissimilar now, of course your Latino girlfriend a boyfriend will be stealthy about it. They won't say it loud They'll just whisper it under their breath now Technically, if you look it up the word dissimilar means to disguise or conceal so what you'll find is if you're staring at something too long that includes a really sexy girl or Someone like a truck driver or motorcyclist relieving himself right next to his bike or truck out on the street You could take the word dissimilar as to mean don't stare be inconspicuous But you see sometimes that's impossible because the sprinkles and expats are down here just observing things We're always on the lookout for crazy-ass moments Like a guy walking around with a toucan on his shoulder or a street urchin Juggling flaming machetes. You certainly don't see that in Cleveland every day

[08:50] It's a new and different culture for us and when we notice things that are different from the way we do things we see things We stare and point things out which will sometimes get you in trouble with your significant other For example, you gringo and expat guys out there You might be walking through a mall with your significant Latina other and a whole group of really hot girls walk by Man, I'm telling you your Latina girlfriend will have some kind of radar You've never seen before with girls up in the States She will be on hyper alert and be hyper pissed if she sees your eye or Viewing angle last more than three-quarters of a second now. She might not say anything right then and there You're gonna hear about it when she gets you alone at the restaurant or when you're back in the car

[09:36] You have to remember latinas have this sort of hair-trigger Jealousy switch going the truth is you may be looking at a girl not because she's super sexy or super hot Maybe it's because she's got a weird tattoo or face piercing or she seems way too young to be dragging three young kids along behind her So in a lot of cases, I'm speaking to gringo guys mostly here You will be in momentary trouble with your girlfriend for looking just a second too long at something that was completely innocent You're saving grace. However, and this is a cultural thing as well Latinas can get super mad at you for a minute, but their fury will die down quickly They all seem to have that tomorrow's a brand new day kind of attitude, which in a lot of ways is really good

[10:22] But it's also been sort of the downfall of their love romance and relationship stability problem or I should say Instability problem. It turns out most all Latino Latina romantic relationships are unstable So what do I mean by that? Well, here's a good example normally up in the States, you know when a couple has a kid and their relationship disintegrates or falls apart if He becomes a deadbeat dad gets way behind in the child support or just disappears for a while That guy pretty much becomes persona non grata in the family Sure He's the kid's daddy But he's considered a piece of shit if he falls way behind on child support or gets into drugs or alcohol whatever, maybe he gets his weekend visitation rights with the kids, but

[11:08] Generally, he has to beat the horn outside in the car and wait for the kid or knock on the front door He's not welcome inside the house. He gets his visitation rights, but he's not invited in Sure, there are deadbeat dads in the States and they suffer for it. But down here in Latin America They are everywhere the deadbeat guy who's the daddy of a kid or two or three He may be a year behind on his child support or never paid any at all Still he'll show up at the XY for ex-girlfriends house She'll generally let him in even cook dinner for him no matter what kind of shit He's pulled and what kind of asshole he's been that's one of the hardest things for gringos and expats to accept It's almost always true when a gringo or gringa is in a relationship with a Latina or Latino There'll be some jerk

[11:54] Deadbeat old boyfriend still trying to come around or calling her brothers and sisters trying to remain friends with them So he can get it in somehow with his ex man. I've seen that happen over and over again It seems latinas have just a real hard time cutting off a bad ex completely I mean just slamming the door in his face saying get out of my life Blocking him on what's up and all the other anti social media sites as mentioned latinas have very hot tempers initially But short memories for trauma Seems Latino guys just have a way of weaseling back into the life of their exes now Of course, if you're a long-time listener to this program, you'll know according to most all latinas gringos and expats are very good catches There's just so many reasons why we shine like superstars

[12:40] Which is very discouraging to an ex-husband or boyfriend who normally would think he still had a chance with his ex The problem is and I've heard this from many gringos and expats who are hooked up in a long-term relationship with Latina Who's got kids or a kid that cheating scumbag ex-boyfriend or husband will never really be out of her life Completely as long as they've got a kid or two together because the kids, you know, they love their daddy No matter how much of a jerk or deadbeat he is he'll come around knowing he could leech off his ex I kid you not have seen it in action. No matter what kind of lying deadbeat womanizing asshole He's been they've got a slightly different concept of embarrassment compared to gringos and expats I'll tell you I grew up with my mother and my relatives always scolding us kids trying to keep us in line

[13:27] So we didn't embarrass the family. They heard that a million times. Whatever you do. She'd say and my dad would say it too Don't ruin the family name. Don't embarrass us to the point that we all suffer for your stupidity My parents would say whatever you do is a reflection on us and the family I remember one of my uncle said it takes two seconds to tarnish a family name and a whole generation To regain that former luster. So then what's that got to do with Latin America? Well, if you're sitting down with a bunch of Latinos and then Latinas at a party or a get-together whatever you'll find out their embarrassment triggers are a lot different than yours you can start by asking them about the most Embarrassing thing that happened in their life or just say something like this to him. Let's play a game Let's talk about embarrassing situations. I'll tell you one of mine. You tell me one of yours. That's always a conversation starter

[14:17] Well, I'll tell you that does get people going I've been in some of those round rabbits and gringos and expats always have many more stories of embarrassment than Latinos I mean look the most you get out of a Latino or Latino when you ask that question is well You know, I don't like to invite my girlfriend over the house because the house is always dirty and looks like crap I'm embarrassed to bring her inside now really that's pretty lame, isn't it? How come they never bring up the obese sister with the yoga pants that are three sizes too small? No embarrassment there That's too normal too common speaking of embarrassing situations. What might be your most embarrassing moment? Hey, we've all got a few I'll tell you what am I and you tell me one of yours Want to hear a good one? Well to me it's a good one Let me give you the background on this I built a big house in Chicago many years ago

[15:04] I was the general contractor. I farmed out the concrete the electrical the plumbing the carpentry, etc I hired this carpenter and everything depends on the carpenter You know, he's putting up the rough work and then the electricians come in etc In the states building a house. He's the key element. It's all kind of timed out one guy depends on the other You know, the concrete guy gets in there does his work the electrical guy the plumber the roofer all timed with inspections It's like a sort of a dance, but everyone pretty much depends mostly on the carpenter So I hired this carpenter and his crew and suddenly he started getting farther and farther behind and other guys were complaining The electrical the concrete guy the plumber he was slowing them down screwing up their schedule They all had other work to do and that was all timed out, too Then eventually the guy quit showing up all together man were the other contractors pissed

[15:51] I was getting a month two three months behind Finally, I just called a guy up and kicked him off the job hired a new guy He came in and finished it off. We got back on schedule, but I didn't lose two months along the way So anyway about three four years later was a Saturday night downtown, Chicago outside of a big fancy restaurant Really nice and fancy guys with suits girls with dresses They've got a little outside sitting area because you can't get in right away You have to wait at least, you know half hour 45 minutes to get in there's a line even though you've had reservations for a week So anyway, I'm in that little garden outside area Maybe 25 or so people there mulling around waiting to get called in to sit at their tables Meanwhile, there's people walking by on the sidewalk. We're talking about downtown Chicago

[16:36] Nice high-end wealthy area town the restaurant and entertainment district lots of foot traffic and suddenly now remember It's like 25 people mulling around waiting for their name to get called in to the restaurant This lady in this guy walked right by and she stops. She says to the guy she's with her husband Whatever. She said with a big loud voice. Look look who's here It's that asshole Johnny the guy who doesn't pay his bills The guy who stiffed my brother the carpenter who built his big house and man all those 25 people mulling around their ears Perked up then she said very loudly to the guy she was with that's how he can afford going to expensive restaurants by stiffing Contractors then she just took the hand of the guy she was with and walked away So there I was standing there in front of one of Chicago's most exclusive and nice restaurant

[17:26] Everyone around me in tuxedos and formal gowns Hearing that lady called me an asshole thief basically Well, needless to say once we got into that restaurant all night. I was getting the strangest looks from people Can you think of anything more embarrassing? I mean no one there except me knew the whole story She was right about one thing though. I didn't pay the final payment to her brother I fired him and hired someone else to finish the job But how could I possibly explain all that to 25 or so people who think I'm nothing but a big asshole Now as you might have figured the guy that carpenter who I unceremoniously fired went back and told his family an Acceptable version of the story so as to not make him look like a jerk So naturally he made me the asshole has that ever happened to you where you've been stuck in a spot and you knew

[18:14] There was just no way to explain your way out of it Even if you were a hundred percent in the right just wouldn't be worth it if you tried Just believe me if something like that happened in Latin America You hired a guy to build a house or do the carpentry plumbing concrete Whatever and he just quit showing up and you just quit paying him and you end up hiring someone else Believe me that happens all the time. Guess what if some time later even years later You ran into the guy at a party or something. He'd smile come over and treat you like a long-lost friend I'm not kidding. That's the difference. It's that sin very Gwenza thing. No shame Speaking of embarrassing moments Have you ever been embarrassed not for yourself But for someone else and the feeling sort of comes back in a way every time you think about it

[19:01] I'll never forget it was my high school prom, you know formal dress and all that I mean, it's the big event of the year. I Remember at the time the dance floor was fiercely crowded There were a couple of guys and gals on the floor in tuxedos and formal dress One of the girls who was dancing apparently had just come from the bathroom long piece of toilet paper Stuck to the back of her dress coming right out of her waistband Trailing out as she danced like a tail Well, she didn't notice it because it was behind her and the guy was dancing in front of her So he didn't notice it and one by one people started gaping eyes wide open sporadic laughter broke out Then thankfully a good Samaritan girl grabbed her by the arm and took her back to the bathroom Didn't see that girl at all the rest of the night

[19:46] But guess what even decades later when I remember that I feel a little embarrassment for that girl I wonder how's that possible even decades later? I feel a little embarrassment for the girl I hardly even knew you know, speaking of truly embarrassing moments There are some embarrassments that are better left unsaid. They're just kept inside too embarrassing to reveal Well, one of those things happened to one of my engineering buddy I won't mention his name because I promise they never would but here's what happened You know in engineering school, I think out of a class of a hundred only maybe eight of us had girlfriends I did because I played in a band and you know, that gives you a little extra cachet with the ladies But most of my engineering buddies were just sex and relationship starved nerds

[20:32] Hey, you know most nerds are not popular with the girls till they make their first million or so Anyway, my buddy his name was mark won't tell you his last name He told me after he started working at a big tech company. He'd met the girl of his dreams He told me after his first date with her. He was in love. He said I'm gonna marry that girl Wow, that's happened to quite a few nerds. I've known they fall for the very first girl that pays him any mind Anyway, first date went fine. They got along like a house on fire Second date even better third date. He invited her back to his apartment. They were sitting on the couch Suddenly she makes a quick move and grabs the little flip phone she had in her purse Oh, no, it's an emergency call from my mother. She said the calls kind of private I'll take it in the bathroom. If you don't mind She went into the bathroom was in there for a few minutes my buddy sitting on the couch alone in the living room

[21:23] Well, she came out of the bathroom and said sorry, it's not a big emergency But I have to go over to my grandma's house right now. Can you drop me off there? Can we reschedule this date for tomorrow night? Now remember he's telling me this story Anyway, long story short. They got married. They've been married ever since one of those few early relationship hookups that stood the test of time Anyway, here's what really happened. It turns out it wasn't her grandma on that phone at all There was no one on that phone. It was a ruse. She made up on the spot sitting on that couch She had a case of explosive diarrhea She made it to the bathroom just in time But what she didn't know was that my nerd buddy mark Saw that she'd left a little brown skid mark on his sofa and while she was in the bathroom

[22:09] He went to the kitchen cleaned up that spot and flipped the sofa cushion over So when she came back into the room Problem solved mark told me to this day decades later. He never told her he did tell me though if he hadn't have acted quickly He's dead sure she would have been so embarrassed. He never would have heard from her again, man Was that quick thinking on his part sin virgwanza? Alright moving on. Let's talk about my upcoming expat insider seminar It's taking place in August 2025 from the 15th through the 22nd Now if you're intent on having a plan B and you're looking to apply for a permanent residency in Guatemala You could do it at the same time you come down to the seminar You just have to stay on an extra seven days

[22:54] So then what about seminar attendees who end up staying down having a plan B in Guatemala or another place in Latin America Well with my last expat insider seminar, which launched about a year ago now I think it would be interesting and enlightening for me to read parts of this email I just got from one of the attendees that came to my last seminar and now he's living permanently in Guatemala. He says Dear Johnny. I finally did it. I moved out of my house in the States sold my car my gun collection And most of my worldly possessions. I moved to Guatemala permanently I'm now working on residency using your great seminar attorney Jose. He says guess what? I found a great condo in zone 14 Guatemala City. It's brand-new construction Partially furnished three bedrooms two and a half baths

[23:44] 1500 square feet luxury all the way in for 1300 bucks a month Came with a brand-new stainless steel whirlpool appliance set washer dryer Microwave fridge even a dishwasher. It's got a large pantry a nice balcony pool park recreational area He says I've been here a month now and I'm incredibly happy with my new life moving though was very stressful There were a thousand little things that I hadn't thought of before I started the move I work from home and need a high-speed internet service. For example I didn't know what company offered that or how much it would cost. Can I even get the speed that I really need? And how about how do I sign up for electric and water service? What about all those little things that one needs for a household like cleaning supplies dishes sheets and towels?

[24:34] trustworthy cleaning lady Etc. Etc. I didn't know where to start to get any of these things. Frankly. It was a bit overwhelming He says after coming to your seminar and as many times as I have visited Guatemala I'd always stayed in Airbnb's all I ever had to worry about was what am I gonna do for dinner? Am I gonna go out tonight or order uber eats? Luckily your friend in mind in one of our seminar hosts known as mr Rico hooked me up with miss Evelyn one of your terrific Seminar concierge ladies who offers a service for gringles and expats to help Handle all of those small and large details. So I took advantage of that hired her She helped me with translations apartment tours dealing with the landlord hiring a cleaning lady

[25:20] Shopping tips the whole works your seminar concierge lady Evelyn was an absolute lifesaver I can't imagine trying to do all this on my own especially with my pathetic Spanish skills He says Johnny the team you put together for the seminar is priceless And I'm glad I was a repeat offender at your seminars over the last two years Those seminars were an amazing help the tour is incredibly valuable But the personal relationships I made with your group of experts and expats was priceless last But most certainly not least Johnny the mating and dating angle I'm very happy that now when I meet a young Latina and she asked me how long I'm visiting the country I can tell her I actually live here He says the difference in the reception I get from the ladies

[26:06] From when I said I was just a visitor versus actually being a resident has been amazing The Latinos have shown me a totally different attitude now that I'm actually a resident here Then he attached a great photo of him and a beautiful lady at a beautiful restaurant. He says Johnny I think I said more than enough for now. Hopefully I'll see you down there south of south of the border soon By the way, if your seminar attendees want to see my condo while they're here I'd be happy to show them although right now. I'm the only gringo in the entire development like you always say Johnny It's kind of nice. Anyway, thanks for all you do sincerely signed. Mr. T Formerly of the rapidly deteriorating blue state of Delaware home to our 46 president, although he may not remember where he lives Alright, thanks. Mr. T for the rundown
