Episode Summary
In this episode of The Expat Files, Johnny Mueller discusses the growing presence of Chinese cars in Latin America, highlighting brands like Jack JAC, Photon, Sang Young, Rexton, and Changan. He notes that while some models are small and have three cylinders, others are clones of well-known brands like Honda and Toyota. Johnny also points out the common issues with Chinese cars, such as poor resale value and mechanical deterioration, and compares their situation to that of Korean car manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai, who initially had a similar reputation for poor quality but eventually improved.
Johnny further discusses the quality and market presence of Chinese and Indian cars in Latin America, emphasizing that despite their affordability, they often deteriorate quickly and are not reliable. He mentions Indian cars like Mahindra, which are clones of popular models but suffer from similar quality issues. Johnny advises against buying these cars, especially for expats, and suggests that while they may look good initially, they are prone to failure and lack proper parts availability. He also talks about the challenges of finding replacement parts for these vehicles and recommends using cheaper, non-original parts from local suppliers.
In another segment, Johnny explores the affordability and availability of Chinese and Indian car parts in Latin America, suggesting that expats can often find cheaper alternatives online. He also touches on the cultural significance of SUVs in Latin countries, where owning a new SUV is seen as a status symbol, even if it's a cloned or cheaper version. The segment also highlights the common issue of dented and damaged cars due to traffic and the financial constraints of many Latin Americans, who often prioritize buying a new car over fixing minor damages. Additionally, Johnny comments on the prevalence of cheap, low-quality Chinese furniture and the practicality of having a cleaning lady for expats in the U.S., suggesting that expats might find more freedom and lifestyle benefits in Latin America.
Johnny then discusses the importance of 'getting your boots on the ground' when planning to move to Latin America, emphasizing that while the internet is useful, it's not a substitute for real-world experience. He promotes his upcoming July 2015 Expat Wisdom Seminar as a way to gain practical knowledge and prepares for potential global upheaval, suggesting that Latin America and Southeast Asia are viable options for expats. He also mentions Richard Martin's upcoming seminar in Penang, Southeast Asia, as an alternative for those interested in that region. Johnny highlights the growing trend of Latin Americans migrating to the U.S., particularly to California, due to new policies allowing undocumented Latin Americans to obtain driver's licenses, which can lead to access to government programs. He warns that this trend could have significant implications for the U.S. tax dollar.
Finally, Johnny reflects on his experience moving to California and discusses a weather lady seminar in Latin America. He highlights the lack of qualifications required to become a weather lady in the region, such as physical appearance and luck, as opposed to formal education in meteorology. He also comments on the limited number of weather lady positions available and the unrealistic expectations of the seminar's participants. The segment ends with a humorous and critical remark about the seminar's potential impact and a public service announcement about the consequences of having children without intelligence.

[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came up to play and now I wonder Hello there all you expat wannabes I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here. So let's get started Okay, let's start out today by talking about cars just a little bit. Here's a question I want to ask you listeners out there have Chinese cars invaded the States yet I remember some years ago. There was a car called a Gili I think it's the most popular tiny car in China from what I remember it was supposed to be on sale in the States
[00:51] It's big selling point was supposed to be the cheapest car on the market I haven't seen any of them down here in Latin America But let me tell you this every Latin American city has plenty of used car dealerships and every Latin City 100,000 or over has many new car dealerships, too And yes, the Chinese have arrived in a big way Here are some of the brands that are down here in Latin America, which I doubt you've ever heard of before Maybe not maybe you have once called Jack JAC then there's photon F-o-t-o-n one's called sang young which is s-a-n-n-g y-o-u-n-g There's one called rexton re xto n and then there's Changan Which is c-h-a-n-g-a-n that's the tough one to say fast and many others now
[01:38] If you're thinking that these cars are tiny little putt-putts of a thousand cc's or less like a motorcycle with a car body over it Well, you'd be wrong except for a model called cherry c-h-e-r-y Nope, there's no two Rs like in cherry pie It's c-h-e-r-y Now you see a lot of them around and it's hard to get used to the fact that they left an R out of the cherry They pronounce it the same, but it just doesn't look right surely some Chinese marketers linguistic mistake You see that all the time We've all bought Chinese products and we see how they mong up the English language case in point If you've ever bought a lamp or a TV or a piece of furniture That's made in China if you have to assemble anything and read the instructions Let me ask you this has there ever not been a misspelled or misplaced English word
[02:25] I really believe that's what happened with the cherry car after they made the expensive metal dies and went into production Someone eventually told him they spelled it wrong, but they just couldn't change that letter anymore And the poor Chinese engineer or draftsman who dropped that letter. He's an unwitting organ donor by now I'm sure that said the cherry company with one R does make an 800 CC and a thousand CC putt putt Actually, they're not putt putts even though. They've only got three cylinders dig that by the way down here in Latin America There are a lot of small cars that have three cylinders even Hyundai Peugeot and Suzuki have a three cylinder small car down here don't know what it's like up in the states But I don't think so though I could be wrong now This cherry car from China was the first one to make it down here to Latin America back in about
[03:17] 2007 they've even got a bigger model that's an exact copy of a Suzuki Vitara and I guess they can take a beating because they never seem broken down on the Side of the road and I know a few Latins who've owned them and they're pretty happy with them Except they say if there's more than two adults in the car They have a hard time getting up hills, but to me and most gringos. They're just oversized toys Now the thing is the other five Chinese car manufacturers I mentioned earlier they produce and sell cars that are pretty much exact clones of Toyotas and Honda's Kia's high on days even get this range rovers How do you like that? You can buy a car that looks almost exactly like a range Rover down here yet It's Chinese and it's got a funky Chinese name and emblem on it
[04:02] So you can buy pretty much what you might call Honda CRV You know small SUV clone Chinese style for about two-thirds of what you'd pay for the real Honda That's a pretty big piece of change you'll be saving So for example, say you're in Nicaragua or Honduras or Guatemala or Salvador You could probably get a brand new Honda CRV for about 25 grand or a little more and the photon Sang young or Chang Yang Honda clone for around 15 to 20 grand and believe me the Chinese have come a long way These things actually look pretty nice and they're well put together Seemingly, but here's a tip never buy one. Not only do they seem to deteriorate Aesthetically and mechanically a lot faster than the model of their copying
[04:48] they also have his poor resale value as Evidence by the fact that if you look in a Latin newspaper the used cars section You'll see people trying to dump their new or light new Chinese vehicle with regularity You see the same vehicles week after week. Remember that phrase never buy someone else's garbage. You see him Disproportionally represented in the paper and in the internet one adds all the time. So what's that tell you? You know, they have a saying down here in Spanish. That's kind of like our own up north It goes like this in el fin, but I thought Valley Caro in the end cheap is expensive Kind of like you get what you pay for So anyway, I'm telling you don't be fooled by the look and feel these things in the showroom In fact, it's kind of a repeat of what happened with the Korean car manufacturers
[05:36] Maybe 10 or 15 years ago when South Korean companies like Kia and Hyundai I think they're one in the same now Anyway, they came out with their landed cars got improved for sale in the States and they too proved to be bad Deals in the long run. In fact, I remember some years ago when Kia first came out with a model called the Sportage That was their small SUV and lots of people down here in Costa Rica and Panama, etc But those cars because they were a third cheaper than a Toyota RAV car They were supposed to be competing with head-to-head But they just didn't hold up not to all the potholes and the climate and back then those were the vehicles that would show up light new in the paper with great regularity obviously being dumped early by their owners who bought cheap and were quickly
[06:22] Dissatisfied but that was then 10 or so years ago Now the new Sportages are night and day compared to the old ones and how that happened Well Kia and Hyundai have done what the Japanese did early in the 70s and 80s They entered the market with downscale pieces of crap and after 10 or 15 years learned by hook and crook all about quality And now if you notice Kia and Hyundai once considered just pretty much crap are winning all kinds of car of the year awards But let's talk Chinese cars now besides the much lower price Chinese dealerships try to suck you in with another angle and Latins who can afford it fall for it in a big way Take for example this Chinese vehicle this SUV called the Rexton It looks just about exactly like a Toyota 4runner and they have another model that looks like a Toyota Land Cruiser
[07:13] And here's how Latins with a little knowledge and a little money get fooled I was driving behind one of these rextons one day, and I noticed on the back You know where they have the model number in chrome. It said rexton powered by get this Mercedes Benz then I saw another one of these rexton pieces of crap that I think was about one year old and it was blowing diesel like A chicken bus a one-year-old car blowing smoke come on anyway this time There was a stencil on the back window that said powered by Mercedes Benz Which means some slick Chinese marketing guys back at the factory in Wang Yang knowing the reputation of Mercedes Benz worldwide made it a point to incorporate a Mercedes motor or drivetrain or top-end or even just a block or valves or pistons who knows whatever the case
[08:04] They've got some Mercedes Benz parts to make that claim and man Let me tell you it worked seen a lot of them down here in Latin America And my advice don't fall for it Just go ahead and let Latins with good credit and an incomplete education buy those things as for gringos and expats don't bite These things too will deteriorate quickly into pieces of crap in a couple years And how can I make a blanket claim like that well these days? SUVs made in China seem to be appearing everywhere yet I've never seen one over a couple years old whose paint and bumpers and exterior didn't look twice its age It seems the Chinese are stuck in a rut with bad quality paint and plastic Oh, yeah, and I gotta tell you India is making a big presence down here in Latin America, too They've got Indian style SUVs that are also clones of modern popular vehicles and some of the models
[08:56] I see every day are from a company called Mahindra again I wouldn't drive one of those things if I wanted it in a raffle. I'd sell it the day after believe me They've got the very same problem that the Chinese have in a year or two They look more than twice their age now some of these guys are giving three-year hundred thousand kilometer warranties But you know pretty much any vehicle of any model or manufacturer can last that long without going to absolute crap Oh, and by the way Latin America is being invaded by these Indian made three-wheeled so-called tuk tuk That's the annoying sound they make when they're driving by duck duck duck cheese That's the sound they make duck duck duck duck duck Who's that guy get him out of here anyway believe it or not?
[09:42] I've heard the tuk tuk and Bollywood movies are the two most well-known Indian exports So again all you guys and gals out there Don't be fooled by a pretty car with a Indian or Chinese name They all look pretty and sharp when they're brand new just like furniture And you know when you buy that press board crap from China It all looks good for a couple of weeks or months till you spill something on it or your cleaning lady Wax it one too many times with the vacuum cleaner then of course the finish starts coming off and it delaminates You know the story remember in el fin Barato salicado in the long run cheap is expensive you get what you pay for oh and the other thing even if you win One of these things in a lottery what about parts your brand new Changyung Fung might look like a Toyota four-runner
[10:28] But you're not gonna be able to buy four-runner parts at the local dealership And you really wouldn't want to buy original parts down here for any vehicle cuz they're too damn expensive Instead for any vehicle you want to go to any one of the thousands of tiny little hole-in-the-wall car parts and auto suppliers because they carry a great variety of non-original cheap replacement parts for almost all the common cars on the road and The Chinese and Indian cars aren't really common on the road yet, so you won't find replacement parts at the corner shops So you'll go to the dealership And you'll pay more than you have to for parts for even junky cars like those and you know in regards to that Controversy should you buy original replacement parts at Toyota or whatever or should you buy from the guy down the street?
[11:15] Who's got the same thing for a quarter of the price? I always say tell your mechanic to buy everything he can at those little hole-in-the-wall shops And only those replacement parts. He absolutely can't get that way at the dealership Why well for example a headlight assembly for a Mazda 3 at the dealership might cost you around 400 bucks if you bought the original part and at one of these corner non original replacement part stores You know they get their junk from China, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, whatever then you'll pay 75 bucks for the same thing and normally you just can't tell them apart So are a few spare parts made in China or Mexico gonna make your car run crappier? I doubt it so unless your money bags if you're looking for parts skip the dealership whenever you can Oh, and by the way if you get in a wreck and something does get damaged on your car
[12:04] And you are stuck going to the dealership for a special part price it out at the dealer and after you've come down from The sticker shock go on Amazon or eBay and check it out and you'll find you probably can get that same part for half Or less, then you have them ship it to that Miami address that I spoke about in the last show And when it lands in your Latin country you can pick it up at their office Or they'll ship it right to your door for around five bucks a pound complete for more detail go back a few shows and check It out, so then what about the dealerships that sell these Chinese and Indian cars down here? There aren't independent Chinese car dealerships They're always attached to an existing brand name that you know like Mazda or Toyota Chevy Ford Kia even Nissan
[12:49] So you'll go to your Nissan or Ford dealer, and you'll see a small section of that dealership devoted to Chinese or Hindu cars That's how so many Latins are introduced to these vehicles and get a close-up. Look they see for example the Toyota and 20 steps away the Chang Yong Hong Dong long and say hey man for 10 grand less I can buy a car that looks just like a Range Rover or a Land Cruiser or a RAV or a Mitsubishi Montero And like I said for that upper five or ten percent of Latin Americans that I couldn't afford to buy a new car They see a Range Rover clone at two-thirds or half the price and they're dazzled remember down here You are what you wear and what you drive and as of now anyway Latin people who are trying to impress other Latin people have no concept of car brand names and their value
[13:41] All they know is an SUV any SUV gives a guy real status Sure They recognize BMW Mercedes and Audi because they're very expensive brands that only scumbag politicians and narcos seem to drive So like I said having any new or late-model SUV elevates a Latin into the status stratosphere And you know it really doesn't matter if a guy can afford gas for that car or even food for his family He could be on the 10-year payment plan at 30% interest and nobody would know it They only know he's driving a new SUV. What a lucky son of a doofus, huh? Oh and speaking about automobile affordability when you're driving down here You'll notice a lot of light new SUVs cars that are pretty expensive that have a lot of dings in them You know, I've mentioned that before you just can't avoid it
[14:28] And you'll notice a lot of bangs in the doors and some rather deep creases in the back ends of some of these SUVs from Low-velocity rear-end collisions a very common occurrence due to the diminished personal space problem down here And when you're stuck behind a guy like that at a stoplight the first thing you might think of is He's got a brand new Toyota RAV and he's driving around with a dent in his rear end a new car And he doesn't get that thing fixed. Well, that's because 90 to 95 percent of Latins are so stretched out on their credit money is so tight that They can afford to buy that car on payments and the car insurance You're forced to get if you're on payments yet They can't even scratch a hundred bucks together to get the body work done because body guys take cash and all those minor nicks and dings
[15:16] Increases, you know end up below your deductible So you got to pay a revolt and development. I know we've all been there and now you've got Obamacare and those huge deductibles, but I digress. Oh and by the way earlier I mentioned if you've got furniture from China, it's all over the world these days even down here in Latin America It's usually junk laminated press board and no matter how good it looks when you get it in a year So it turns to crap. It's happened to me. It's happened to you Now I mentioned that you'll find that out earlier as your cleaning lady Wax it a few times with your vacuum cleaner Which brings us to that stark reality that probably ninety nine point nine percent of all you listeners out there No matter how wealthy you are don't have full-time cleaning ladies because you'll probably have to dish out about 40 grand a year if she's on the books and everything that is now isn't that the icing on the cake for any woman up in
[16:07] The states thinking of expatting. The fact is almost every gringo and gringo I know has a cleaning lady or is planning to get one. They make a whole twelve to fifteen dollars a day So to all you expat gonna be and want to be ladies up there Isn't it on the top of your fantasy wish list that you'd never have to do housework again or cook or iron for that matter I say what the hell you waiting for come on down You only live once for all you guys up there in the states who have on your wish list that you never want to do Housework again either or cook or iron for that matter I guess that gringo cleaning lady advantage won't mean much to you because you don't do that kind of stuff anyway now Do you if you're like most guys? I knew back in Chicago You either have your better half do that kind of stuff or if that's not the case not much gets done at all now
[16:54] Does it so you dig out when you have to and the rest of the time you live in the eye of the hurricane? So then ladies and gents if you really want to live the life you always wanted to live do everything you always wanted to do Except for that one little problem up north you're on a treadmill and there's not enough hours in the day What are you waiting for? Come on down and find out what most all expats find out after they've been here a while that in so many ways They've kind of won the lottery So it doesn't really matter what your reasons are for wanting to expat to Latin America Most people have a list as long as their arm, but I don't have to tell you that Anyway, one of the best ways you can get your plan be in action that exit plan We're always talking about so when the feces finally does hit the ventilator up in the states my number one recommendation
[17:43] Get your boots on the ground now. The Internet is fine and very valuable, but it's no substitute for getting your boots on the ground Sitting at home and surfing to find out everything you can about Latin America is like flying a simulator versus flying a real airplane So what's one of the best ways of all to get your boots on the ground come to my July 2015 expat wisdom seminar It gets underway in just a couple of weeks Just go to www expat wisdom calm click on the Latin seminar link and get on board now the way I plan these seminars if things remain relatively calm in the world like they are right now Even though there are very bad signs on the horizon if it stays that way and the world's kind of in limbo like it is Right now I'll do another one in six months
[18:28] However, a lot of people in the know who are much smarter than I am are predicting that within the next six months or so The Titanic will hit the iceberg then you can bet I'll be doing no more seminars I mean you do know that time is running out, right? You could say that internationally even though there are those humps and valleys It's kind of the calm before the storm before the big one, whatever that is war economic or social collapse Environmental disaster who knows but something's coming and it ain't good But you know what I don't worry and I don't care things down here in Latin America off the gringo tourist trail They're just fine and dandy. So then you might ask Johnny Nothing's perfect. You got to have a complaint about something. What are you missing down there in Latin America? Well, I'll tell you first world prices first world taxes and first world big brother
[19:18] Isn't that enough to make you want to come down here and check it out for yourself? Now that said I know a lot of you guys and gals out there Listen to my show and Richard Martin shows too And I know you guys and gals out there only listen to media drivel to see what kind of slop their Dition out to the masses know your enemy, right? So for those of you who haven't heard Richard Martin show It's www Richard Martin's wake-up call. That's all one word Dot-pot Bean dot-com that said over the years Richard Martin's been keeping an eye on how I do my seminars in Latin America And now he's offering an initial seminar himself in Southeast Asia based on my seminar But it's across the other side of the world in Penang So for all of you out there who'd like to test the waters in that part of the world
[20:07] And you happen to be of a mind that you'd like to visit or live in an English-speaking environment in Southeast Asia And would like to get your boots on the ground starting in Penang You can do no better than to go to a seminar given by Richard himself. Just give him a call at 702-609-9962 that's 702-609-9962 His seminar is from august 23rd to august 28th of this year So then why am I bringing this up? And why do I think it's a good idea? Well, if you're really and truly going to be an expat you've got two real choices to escape what's going to happen to the first world and that's either come to latin america and become an expat or Go to Southeast Asia and become an expat those will certainly in the long run be your best two choices
[20:59] So that said with my boots on the ground latin american seminar and with Richard's new seminar You've got two plan b's to choose from we've got them both covered That said here's a little unsettling news that appeared in all the latin newspapers this morning And believe it or not through all of latin america This news story has gone viral even though 80 percent of latin americans do not have a permanent internet hookup They're all talking about this one today They're talking about it and hundreds of thousands have been packing their bags for the last few weeks Why did you know that the idiot governor of california? Think it's still jerry brown pulled another one of his massive immigration boners and i'll translate this here. It says 350,000 undocumented latins in california have received their license to drive since
[21:46] January of this year. That's when the state of california approved a law that allowed Undocumented latins to legally obtain a driver's license. Nope in these articles. They don't call them illegal transgressors who've broken the law They call them Undocumented latins. Oh how kind in pc latin papers are huh now the kicker Here's why so many poor and middle-class latin americans are packing their bags right now After seeing this news the article goes on to say the california department of motorized vehicles will extend this law to include another one Million more undocumented latins over the next three years. So let me ask you are you okay with that? Well, you better be because it's coming another massive wave of under educated illegal latin americans that speak no english to california
[22:34] Though I suppose maybe if you're in cleveland, you're thinking good thing It's california, but you know what gringos up in the states tend to forget is this latin americans down here in central america and in south america They know through this massive latin grapevine that once you get a license That's a legal document. You can start getting on all kinds of government programs In fact, I heard there's over 25 government programs illegal aliens can sign on to As long as they've got a driver's license or a fake social security card Which is easily obtainable for around a hundred bucks And though the wave may be mostly going to california that'll be in the end. Everyone's tax dollar bub So here's what the millions of uneducated sweaty masses are thinking of right as we speak and a one and a two and a
[23:24] California here I come I started from Where bowers the flowers bloom in the spring Each morning that dawning birdies sing and everything a sun kiss miss it. Don't be late That's why I gonna hardly wait and date california here I Here I come here I come Ah, shut up. Yeah, you tell him bub Now that was either california or the last few gallons of california water going down the drain
[24:17] Probably both. Okay. Now here's something that just absolutely cracked me up now You know in the past I've talked about how anyone could give a seminar down here and if it has anything to do with Entertainment in the media people will flock to it Because I guess like a certain large segment of the american population Latins will do anything to get in the media or get their 15 minutes of fame So what was it? That was so funny. Actually, it's pathetic I just picked up a big local latin american newspaper this week and they've got a big ad in the paper A day-long seminar for a hundred bucks and you can pay that in 10 easy payments, by the way Yeah, the people down here aren't broke, right? So guess what in a short day-long session you can learn how to be a tv Weather lady you heard me a tv weather lady the course itself given by two well-known weather ladies
[25:07] Now unlike in the first world where to be a weather person or weather guy or weather lady You have to have a degree in meteorology Climatology or both check it out. It's a prerequisite And of course you have to have sort of a personality and one hell of a lot of luck or connections But down here in latin america, here's what you need to be a weather lady a perfect figure Very tight sexy clothes and luck a lot of luck The fact is down here you have to win two lotteries the genetic lottery and the luck lottery And that involves a lot more than being in the absolute right place at the right time, too Now suppose you pay your hundred bucks and sign up for this one day weather lady seminar if you're in panama For example, you'll be competing for a total of seven weather lady jobs in the whole damn country
[25:54] And believe me these seven ladies are not giving up their jobs unless they're pregnant or dead and in costa rica It's the same there are about six or seven weather ladies in the whole country Guatemala there are about four weather ladies in the whole country Nicaragua honduras and el solvador they've got about four or five weather ladies who are not giving up their jobs unless they gain weight Or get hit by a truck And by the way, let me tell you that in latin america. There's one unchangeable fact Weather ladies are generally so beautiful often extremely voluptuous that latin men time it and switch their sports channel To get their daily fix of their favorite weather lady. I'm not kidding you You have to come down here and see it for yourself to believe it. Oh and about that weather lady seminar
[26:39] They're actually putting on two more seminars because the first one held 100 and it sold out in a few days So there you have it That's how unrealistic and short-sighted latin folks are in these three seminars alone And who knows how many more they'll be throughout the year. They'll be graduating 300 women to fill how many tv weather lady spots in the country? How about let's say one or two a year? Maybe that is if one gets pregnant and the other gets struck by lightning. Oh, yeah and talk about macho This is a seminar given for weather ladies not men Though I was told on the qt that two gay guys did sign up and now for a public service announcement too bad It's not in spanish It's a fact Stupid people have stupid children if you're stupid, please don't have sex
[27:25] Keep your stupidity to yourself. This message brought to you by the council of concerned citizens who are smarter than you are South of the border You've been listening to the expat files living in latin america coming to you twice a week from somewhere south of the border Email me the expat files at gmail.com And don't forget to check out expatwisdom.com to sign up for your free reports on latin america See you next time nos vemos
