[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came out to play and now that I wonder Hello there all you ex-pat wannabes. I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here. So let's get started Let's start by talking a little bit about getting temporary and permanent residency in Latin America leading to nationality and a passport You know, it's always best if you can to shoot for a permanent residency first Why because it's a shorter waiting period on the way to getting your passport
[00:48] That's about the only reason actually and it's a pretty good reason because temporary residency Generally adds two years on to the process and of course you got to pay for temporary residency In some cases if you do it yourself, which is almost impossible could be 300 bucks And if you get a lawyer might cost you 1,500 to Oh 5,000 bucks depending on your lawyer in the country you're applying it and of course you can avoid all that if you skip Temporary residency and jump immediately to permanent residency And of course that costs money too if you do it yourself, which is almost impossible 300 bucks maybe and Surely endless days standing in hot sweaty lines and moving from building to building in different sections of the big city
[01:34] It's always in the big city, you know Oh and don't forget it's almost impossible to get temporary or permanent residency yourself if you don't speak some Spanish Though if you hire a translator to hang with you and stand in those lines, it can be done But that's gonna cost you some dough too, but you know that already anyway People often ask once you have temporary residency. How do you switch to permanent residency? Well after that two-year waiting period it's generally two years Your lawyer will submit some more paperwork along with a local police report You know to show you've been a good boy or girl the last two years By the way for temporary residency programs like the one in Guatemala. You don't have to show any kind of income at all However, if you're going straight to permanent residency, you will have to do that, but we'll get to that in a second
[02:19] Anyway, suppose you've run out that two-year temporary residency and you're going to permanent residency to have to prove income then Nope, and that's the beauty of temporary residency if you can't prove you have a recurrent monthly income of Usually a thousand to two thousand bucks depending on the Latin country you're applying for residency and temporary residency is the way to go You don't have to prove anything then after the two years you move directly to permanent residency and you don't have to prove income then either That's the beauty of temporary residency Once you've got that two years in and you want to move to permanent residency They waived the bit about having to prove a monthly income Now let's talk for a minute about a special case of going directly to permanent residency I'll read from this email. It explains it a little bit better
[03:06] This one comes from a guy who calls himself the privacy minded procrastinator He says Johnny, how does disability income work for bypassing temporary residency and going directly to permanent residency? How long do you have to have had a disability? Does it have to be classified as either a short or a long-term disability? Does the disability have to be permanent or just show a disability payment upon residency application? Do you have to show any official documents from a doctor up in the States proving you have a disability? Or do you have to go to the Latin American country hook up with a doctor there and get him to do the test to prove it? What a state disability payment work as proof of income for that requirement or do you need a federal or VA?
[03:54] Veterans Administration official document and finally Do you need the same amount in a disability monthly payment as you would with a regular pension to qualify for permanent residency? Because as you probably figured in my case I do get disability when I turn 62, I'll be getting regular Social Security payments too But I'm only 49 now, but getting federal disability payments Need to know the scoop on that Johnny trying to get my ducks lined up right now signed the privacy minded procrastinator Alright, mr. PMP. I think we're all born with a little bit of that procrastination gene I know I was though some of us have a lot more of it than others Well, the good news is in most all that country permanent residency programs
[04:40] They'll pretty much instantly accept monthly disability payments As long as they're coming from a federal state VA or any government run disability program And the same monthly minimum income payments apply However, there are cases for example where some person's been hurt on the job lost a finger or had an eye put out Your mom warned you about that a million times, right? And a settlement from their employers insurance company is a monthly payment for life In fact, you longtime listeners might remember six or eight months ago I talked about a guy I met gringo who qualified for and got his permanent residency based on a monthly disability payment of 2,000 bucks a month for life if you recall as a kid He was at a New Jersey amusement park and somehow or another lost his big toe and that big toe
[05:30] Who knows where it is now? Maybe it ended up in the food court funny enough He said it was the second best thing that ever happened to him. Imagine that some 35 years ago What two grand was worth then probably 5,000 now? Oh, and when he said that was the second best thing that ever happened to him I had to ask what was the first and best and he said without skipping a beat my wife Of course my second wife. The first one was a trial run So I don't know how sincere he was about that because she was standing right there when he said it So in a way he was under duress, but who knows anyway bottom line practically any kind of disability payout Will qualify you for permanent residency as long as it falls within the minimum amount you have to make a month And as far as the proof what do the Latin immigration people need so that it's verified
[06:18] Well, if it's coming from the government state federal or VA You generally just have to print out the latest three months of statements and get them into your Latin lawyer's hand and that's about it However, if you're getting a recurrent disability payment from an insurance company like the guy who lost his toe He said he had to get a letter from the insurance company stating that he gets recurrent disability payments Then he had to get that notarized and apostilled with his state government, New Jersey Now the question as to whether you have a longer short-term disability. Well, it seems Latin immigration and Naturalization departments don't seem to know the difference All they care about is having a letter or three months statements showing you're getting a disability payment And remember you'll be getting those documents in English She'll be forwarding them to your Latin lawyer and he'll be sending them to a authorized translator
[07:07] So the immigration department will read a translation in Spanish of those documents Now I've seen some of those statements showing a deposit from an insurance company for a disability payment and nowhere Does it ever say if it's for a permanent or temporary disability just shows that dollar amount payment from an insurance company that comes monthly In any event if you're going for permanent residency based on disability income, you don't have to get any kind of medical Evaluations or doctor statements. It's all about the monthly income. That's all it seems that Latin immigration departments care about speaking of getting temporary than permanent residency and Waiting it out a few more years to get your nationality and passport Here's some very disturbing news that was just forwarded to me. It's from Guillermo. That's Spanish for Bill Johnny
[07:56] Did you know that starting in? 2021 Americans will now need permission to visit Europe technically They'll now need to get a visa whereas before visiting Europe and the 26 countries in the EU European economic community allowed Americans to travel there for 90 days visa free But that will end in 2021. It'll cost only eight bucks to get a visa But you can bet it's really just another way to stamp file and catalog everyone and get you into some other gigantic databases There will be forms to fill out and plenty of boxes to check then it says the EU Commission estimates it will grant about 95% of Americans will apply to have travel rights to Europe for three years
[08:41] That's how long the visa will last. So they're saying they'll let in 95% of American applicants What if you're not part of that 95% and how are they gonna pick or disqualify the unlucky 5%? It says over 12 million Americans travel to Europe each year. So 600,000 Americans will probably have some trouble entering the EU starting in 2021. That's 5% It's a fact international travel is becoming harder and harder. It's just no fun anymore either Unfortunately now travels being looked upon as a government authorized permission instead of a personal right Then it says for instance last year the US government canceled 362,000 passports you get it
[09:30] 362,000 US passports were canceled all from people who they believed owed 50 grand or more in back taxes. Yes, it was just a suspicion They believed they owed back taxes, but didn't actually have to prove it. That's not necessary The accusation is enough. That means if big badass Uncle Sam wants to keep a person in the United States and stop him from fleeing Whatever or just leaving and traveling all the government has to do is say that there's a suspicion that you owe back taxes And there goes your passport privileges and in the vast majority of cases You won't even know that until you get to the airport and try to take off for that Aruba vacation You already paid for as terrible as this sounds. There's very little due process to be able to pull that off
[10:19] They don't have to go in front of a judge and provide evidence it's all done without the person's knowledge as a simple administrative procedure and aside from taxes The US government can also deny or revoke a passport if you owe or if they believe you owe more than $2,500 in child support, but there's more which brings me to this next email delinquent school loans That's next on the docket. We all know someone who's delinquent or buried delinquent on school loans Could be you or the guy next door could be me for instance. Here's an email from mr. D D for delinquent Johnny What happens if I come down to Latin America? Start my residency process Yet have a bunch of school loans that I somehow don't pay or forget to pay
[11:07] the point would be to drastically lower my profile and get out under the radar as much as possible and From what I've heard on your shows. They can't really shag you down not when you're in a foreign country Sure, they go after whatever properties or assets you have up in the states But I've got little there if I did I would have paid off my loans already Then he says by the way, Johnny. I'm about thirty nine thousand dollars in the hole for school loans started out at around 16,000 but over the years, you know You make the minimum payment or you miss some and they keep adding on charges and surcharges Then I moved to Arizona where things didn't pan out and I skipped two years Took that long for the snail mail bill collectors to catch up to me Oh and for those who say that liberal arts college degrees are useless
[11:52] I have to say my degree and Native American underwater ice sculptures is paying off I recently carved a totem ice sculpture on YouTube It lasted a whole six hours and the best part when I applied for a grant based on that all-important Native American connection They gave me the dough and now I have a go fund me site So money trickles in from all over the world just because of that Native American connection people especially Tree huggers do gooders and SJWs are really supportive of that stuff But Johnny little do they know I'm Irish. Well at least 87% Irish I sent off my DNA to one of those genealogy sites hoping I'd have a few percentage points of Native American blood That would certainly strengthen my case no such luck
[12:39] But I am one point seven five percent African and checking for grants in that domain now Keep up the good work Johnny signed honorary chief Seamus Patrick sitting old bull crap Oh man, Seamus old bull mierda. I think you've kissed the blarney stone one too many times You think I get it. It's in honor of the st. Patty's Day shenanigans though Speaking of being saddled with massive school loans that'll be on your shoulders the rest of your life There was a guy that came down to a previous expat insider seminar young guy I know I told part of this story before I probably told all of my stories before anyway. He told me he was $250,000 in the hole for school loans his degree no not in brain surgery or nuclear physics in
[13:27] Physical therapy. Hey, I'm not knocking physical therapists That's a very useful degree But you won't be driving a Ferrari none too soon and he asked me right up front if he moved to Latin America Permanently could he run away from it? Well, I'll tell you there was a time you could do that but I'm sure if he's not at least paying a minimal amount each month his u.s. Passport is dead in the water as serious and concerned as he was about it I was thinking man. Did you get some fucked up advice? What were you thinking though? At least he made it down to the seminar. I don't know how he script the money up for that Oh, and he loved it down here made all kinds of plans and connections the best of intentions But life's reality is getting away like a two hundred fifty thousand dollar noose around your neck and most probably a permanently blocked passport
[14:17] That's why it's urgent. You get that plan B in action Starting with that Latin American permanent or temporary residency leading to a passport once you've got a second passport You can give your old high-maintenance uncle Sam the thumbs up with your middle finger Because if you have a second passport and they block your u.s. For whatever reason and they can just make up reasons as they go along or single you out as a troublemaker a prepper an anti-vaxxer Maybe you're a pro-gun or anti-gmo blogger you get on one too many government poop lists and there goes the passport Yeah, but I think everyone who listens to this show can be tagged as a troublemaker in one way or another That's why you really have to get that plan B going I don't know what stage you're in right now But one of the easiest and fastest ways to get on the road to that second passport is to show up at my expat
[15:07] Insider seminar the next ones in July it goes from Saturday the 6th of July till Thursday the 11th And at the same time, you know as always many people have done this you stay an extra week apply for your permanent or temporary residency and you're on your way to a second passport and During that week right after the seminar while you're hanging around to do the residency stuff You don't have to hole up in your hotel room You can see the sights hang with Captain Mango and or do the famous John golf post seminar trip That's one of the best ways to see and get the feel of what's really happening on the ground close to the people It'll give you a million business ideas. [16:43] You might recall a couple months ago and intermittently I've been talking about the good the bad the ugly and the great concerning Latino gringa and Latina gringo relationships Well turns out those shows pressed a few buttons a couple of panic buttons too And I've been receiving a trickle of emails from women who've gone out with Latin guys I talked enough about gringo males going out with latinas But not much from the gringa viewpoint because you see there's a lot more gringo males going out with latinas Then vice versa simply because there are more single gringo expats by far than single gringas living in visiting down here Nevertheless the single gringas and expats that come down do end up on a lot of occasions Hooking up with latin guys and here's what they have to say about those relationships pay attention ladies
[17:31] This one's from Korean living in Medellin Colombia in that famous high-rent district Pablo and her subject title says it all why I danced with latin men, but would never date one again Mmm enough said about that. I guess that says it all nicely encapsulated their core No, anyway, she says Johnny I would never advise any of my lady friends though my enemies for sure to date a Latino guy Except for the occasional fun dance in a public setting date them at your own peril, you know Johnny They say bad things come in threes and I was unfortunate enough to date Latin guys three separate times The lying cheating and manipulation are part of the process and they won't even think twice
[18:19] That there's anything wrong with messing with your love and relationship values It's a kind of sociopathic behavior limited exclusively to a certain manipulative skill and it is a skill Cheating and screwing around and having a harem of women being able to manipulate a girl's mind is nothing to them Looking back in my case. I don't know how they got away with it I saw the signs coming at me left and right, but I didn't listen I'm a sucker for a handsome face and body I guess if it's not a sickness that's written up in the DSM that's diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders It certainly belongs there So ladies, let me warn you if you think when you're going out with a Latin guy You're the only one and he'll tell you that all the time to him
[19:07] You're nothing but a conquest and if you think you've got the special talent or whatever it takes to change him Then you need to be on meds not him. He'll never change Oh, but that's not to say he won't want to settle down with you At least in theory because you're taller lighter skin lighter hair than the other Latina ladies around The point of marriage for most of these guys is to improve the family gene pool According to the Latin norm the whiter the taller lighter The hair is a definite leg up for the kids and terrific bragging rights for any Latino family Especially the Latino daddy as a gringa you'll be in great demand as part of that equation Don't think it's not on every Latin guys wish list when some of my American girlfriends first pointed that out to me
[19:54] I thought it couldn't be that cut-and-dry, but yes, they really are out to improve the family gene pool It's an interesting observation at first, but it's also a deep deep cultural flaw. Don't you fall into that trap? After the love is gone, and it will be gone soon enough like the old earth wind and fire song You will be stuck with his kids That's the point his goal of having taller whiter lighter haired kids will have been accomplished at your expense And you'll be stuck with them and undoubtedly there's some truth to the game He's playing those kids will have a leg up, but you as a gringa stuck in that game permanently now You'll find you have a leg down so beware gringo ladies the first days in a relationship with a latin guy
[20:40] You'll think you're so special boy those latin men know how to pour on the syrup, and you say why me? Why are you interested in a gringa? You've got all these beautiful latinas around oh, and they'll say Clinging jealous unworldly latinas. They're so boring early on you'll believe every word He's so sincere and convincing he's had a lot of practice You'll find out when they don't answer the phone for certain days and certain times Disappear for days at a time too you complain and they'll pout turn to tables and accuse you of being Untrustworthy you'll probably genuinely feel bad for a while thinking it's his culture. It's different You shouldn't pressure them you have to learn the rules You'll have to learn the rules all right and the rules are his
[21:26] But I don't expect American ladies to take my advice I've said this to my friends and other gringas who've come down they don't learn they have to find out for themselves the hard way Speaking of the hard way always always use protection because I assume ladies you're gonna go out with latin men No matter what I say so once again number one always use protection with them number two use protection number three use protection Because Johnny has sure as Jesus wears sandals. He'll be sticking it everywhere He can however if you're a loosey-goosey party girl Just looking for a good time and don't mind superficial relationships selfishness and Sociopathy in your men you'll have fun. They fit that bill perfectly. Oh, and did I mention the marathon lies sure
[22:13] Latinos dress and smell great, but the small talk can be so superficial and tedious I don't get how even the thickest ones Latino men who've never read a single book in their lives Still somehow they know everything and anything about World Cup stats Could be because everywhere you go there's a TV with sports blasting in your face You're a Latin guy if you have one will always have an eye and an ear on the TV if there's anything about sports on it at all and now I can see why Latinas who've dated foreigners find their own homeboys extremely lacking, but what choice do they have so Johnny? That's my warning to American girls save yourselves time effort and pain When in Latin America stay single date Canadians Europeans even women buy a set of butt plugs and a vibrator
[23:04] Do everything but get serious with a Latin man Hmm. All right me Johnny here kind of a harsh email from Corin Butt plugs, huh? Ouch. That's got to hurt Alright, then we have this one from Georgie girl a snowbird who lives part-time in Vancouver and part-time in Costa Rica She says Johnny. I think someday soon techies will surely signal the end of the famous Latin lover syndrome How well when Apple comes out with ear buds that have built-in lie detectors The lines will be around the block But more than likely it'll be a cell phone app. There are a few now, but they're not convincing Though for sure when the techies get it, right? We'll have those Latin lover boys dead to rights and the first question to ask are you married or have a girlfriend?
[23:54] That'll surely eliminate 99% of them then she says and this is from Karen I can tolerate most of their games except for the fact that they have several girls at once They get away with it because the culture lets them it's accepted They don't worry about there being any kind of consequences. They are not with a capital not family man material Except there are a few Latin nerd boys out there and Latin geek types You see them in computer stores and tech shops fixing things, but dating geeks is another kind of boring It's real work because you got to train them how to dress up and instill some social graces that geek gene prevails Whether it's in Canada the US or Costa Rica
[24:42] So if you want a shot at hooking up with a Latin man who really will be loyal go for a geek But for me, it's way too much work and the conversation is another level of boring But surprisingly as opposed to dating gringo nerds Latin geeks can really dance But you have to drag them into the clubs because they're way out of their element Great providers great dancers, but terrible with the social graces But our boring soccer weekends with the other kind of Latin guy any better For any Latino guy if you end up being the one that is the one he brings home to see mother in the family You'll have to compete with her, too Remember Latin men typically live with their parents throughout college and only move out of the house once they've found their wife meaning they're used to being doted on hand and foot by all the women in the family and
[25:30] Don't be shocked when he books a love hotel to do the dirty because there'll be no privacy at home and forget about doing in The car at least for me those days are long gone And even if you are the one and he brings you home to meet mom in the family if you think you're exclusive You're an idiot. Even if you're Miss Montreal or Miss Cleveland for him It's all about the notches on the gun belt and you must realize you will be forced into a distinct Gender role by all the lady relatives to they'll be doting on him at parties and dinners and every visit He'll never have to lift a finger when his mom or the lady relatives around He'll never have to sweep a floor wash a dish or iron a shirt It's all very interesting and amusing to watch it first, but in the long run it will destroy any
[26:15] semblance of equality in your relationship and though young thoroughly modern College-educated latinas will talk a good game about feminism and 5050 sharing pulling together equality and Decision-making and all that it's only modern woman window dressing they picked up in college or in self-help boards Oh, and I have Latina friends and they love to post little self-help sayings in Facebook Instagram and Twitter It's an epidemic of sayings about God faith luck horoscopes sadness cures and romance and failed Relationship fixes, etc. Why do they do it because they've all been cheated on along the way and misery loves company Funny how Latin men rarely post such self-help sayings in MEMS. They don't need to do any soul-searching
