[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came out to play and now I wonder Hello there all you ex-pat wannabes. I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here. So let's get started. All right I'll start out by announcing that the early bird enrollment is now open for my July 2019 expat insider seminar It'll take place from Saturday, July 6 through Thursday night
[00:45] July 11 and the entrance fee will include all Transportation costs once you land in Guatemala and seven nights in our hotels included all Breakfasts included too. Oh, and you know if you stay on that extra weekend apply for residency Your lawyer will take you down and open a bank account for you, too And if you want or need to we can hook you up with our hand selected first world trained dentist Besides that if you come early or stay after the seminar for a while You could peruse around for land apartments housing cars health insurance or just take off and explore There are hundreds of options and we'll set all that stuff up for you. Can I get a tomogram or a CAT scan? It's 1,800 bucks at my hospital and I understand it's like 200 if you get it done in Latin America, that's right 200 at least that's what it cost our latest expat attendee who came down and requested one and we'll hook you up with that, too But it can't be spur-of-the-moment. We have to know in advance so we can set up the appointment
[03:51] Oh and at the last seminar one of our attendees said Johnny, can I get one of those panoramic dental x-rays here in Latin America? He said I don't have dental insurance and I need one of those and my dentist charges 500 bucks, so we sent him to a clinic that does those things with the very same machine and guess what it cost him 30 bucks. Yep, 30 bucks versus 500 at his own dentist You might wonder why do dentists need those panoramic x-rays? Well, if you're gonna have braces or any kind of oral surgery or extensive work in your mouth Often the dentist oral surgeon or orthodontist will insist on a panoramic x-ray You probably know what those things are yet sit in a chair and the machine rotates around your head 30 bucks down here versus 500 up in the States. Hey, what's not to like about Latin America?
[04:39] Anyway, if you come down to this seminar and stay a few extra days for a week because you're going for residency or whatever Or going on the John and Galt trip We can also fix you up with dentists and other medical specialists Oh, and we've had a few young lady attendees return back to Cleveland in Seattle 10 years younger. They had Botox Hey, I'm not judging or endorsing it. I'm just saying you can get a hell of a lot cheaper down here How much cheaper well a seminar lady just went and had 50 units. That's a lot I think and she paid five bucks a unit at a certified plastic surgeon Total cost 250 bucks and she said in the States depending where you went. It was from 10 to 20 bucks a unit She said the cheap $10 a unit price usually was to be had at a Botox party or injected by an RN at a beauty parlor
[05:26] meanwhile here in Latin America Plastic surgeons will do it for five bucks a unit a quarter of what plastic surgeons charge up in Cleveland again I'm not endorsing Botox, but people want what they want that's the kind of stuff we talk about during that one hour pre seminar phone consult because you see it just can't come down and Walk into a dentist office or dermatologist office Whatever just like up in the States you have to make an appointment well in advance and we do all that stuff for you Oh, and we don't charge an extra cent for doing any of that stuff It's all part of connecting with us at the expat insider seminar. All right enough said about that and enough of the shameless seminar plugs Now here's a story not so long ago I was in Panama out with some gringos and expats for dinner and wouldn't you know it? We had some real picky gringo expat eaters That always seems to happen when you get a bunch of gringos together down here or up in the States Someone's always dissatisfied sending their food back. It's not done enough. It's done too much too salty too hot too cold too perfect
[06:58] So perfect. There must be something wrong with it. So let's get the waiter over here and grill his ass a bit Yeah, we'll make him talk That's why I hate going out to dinner with at least two of my three sisters They always make a fuss and send stuff back and not just once either If only it could be just once the thing is it's not in the culture here in Latin America for the locals To complain about the food or the service or anything why well for one thing they're absolutely used to the fact that things go slower Here in Latin America, so no one gets up tight or blows a gasket If the waiter or waitress isn't hovering at your table all the time like a drone Oh and you'll have to get used to the fact when you're at a restaurant down here certain things that are right smack dab on The menu in gigantic print won't be available
[07:45] In fact, I remember one time recently in Cartagena, Columbia at a pretty decent restaurant Took me three tries going down the menu picking food off the list asking the waiter before one was actually available Now if that were to happen in the States just one thing on the menu and not available People would just go nuts. They'd blow gaskets. I know my sisters would but down here the locals are just not complainers In fact just a couple of weeks ago at a restaurant I was having a discussion with a couple of Latino guys and one of the guys who just happened to be a Latino plastic surgeon Speak of the devil, huh? Anyway, he said I don't get white gringos complain when they're in restaurants for one thing It's embarrassing to watch even from a distance. He said Johnny. I just don't get it and my friends don't either us Latinos
[08:32] We're just happy that we get to go to a restaurant have someone wait on us and provide a meal You see most Latinos are poor by your standards So that we're actually able to afford to go to a restaurant and have a nice time is really all that matters to us And then he said he motion tell all the other people sitting at those tables. He said Johnny look 95% of the people in here the Latinos they're here now enjoying the night out in a restaurant and their parents Most probably never had a chance to go to a restaurant like this in their lives He said almost all the successful Latin people I know that can afford to go to restaurants like this They came from humble backgrounds parents were farmers or salted the earth types and they didn't have the money or The inclination to take their kids to restaurants or go themselves
[09:17] They made the sacrifices so that we could get a leg up in the world and here we are So Johnny said we go to places They never had a chance to go to then he shook his head and rolled his eyes and said what's there to complain about Talk about lag time, you know, I was thinking in that minute That's the same conversation that just might have gone down in a restaurant in the States back in the 70s or 80s now Don't get me wrong. It's not as if at a restaurant Latinos don't complain a bit when things obviously aren't right They might make a comment to the people at the table. For example, they might say muy salado Which means it's very salty But it's only a picky gringo who send that food back and if by chance the Latino does send food back He does it ever so politely Now my crazy buddy ex-pat Eddie who's owned many restaurants in his day
[10:06] He said Johnny There's one piece of advice you ought to heed if you're gonna complain about the food in a restaurant Never blow your stack get upset or complain in a harsh or testy manner At least not early in the game because you know, depending who's in the kitchen and how much you've rattled them Whatever food you're waiting on just might be violated if you know what I mean not a pleasant thought But hey disgusting stuff does happen You see hidden camera shots and photos on the internet all the time though expat Eddie will also tell you there's a hell of a lot more that going on in the United States than there ever will be in Latin American restaurants because Cooks chefs and waiters in Latin America not only like and have fun at their jobs You can tell just look at them Oddly enough They're just happy to have a job and don't see even those kind of jobs has dead end like so many first world people
[10:56] Do and on top of that rarely get complained to or bitched at so they're much less likely to Harbor Resentment or sabotage people who do complain, but then again, there are lots of whining complaining gringos on the tourist trail So the question is will the locals retaliate only time will tell Now expat Eddie tells stories of Latinos who sent food back, but they always do it with a smile For example a Latina lady might call a waiter over and say this is supposed to be more well done Could you please cook it a little more? She'll say it very politely. No edge in the voice No, do it now you dipshit look in her eyes So then there's really no reason for the kitchen help to resort to revenge tactics Though I do wonder about the going go tourist trail with whiners and complainers like my own sisters
[11:45] Filing through those places more and more. There's always one in every crowd the picky type that sends back at least Something and Eddie would know he says most of the chronic restaurant complainers in the room are gringa women as for gringo men He says you really have to screw it up for them to send something back guys. Just like to eat They'll eat anything including their own cooking On here's another crazy, but not unusual thing that happened when I was at that restaurant with those gringos There was a table for two fairly close to us and you could tell there was a fight brewing guy and a girl obviously a couple Latin guy about 35 Latina late 20s I'll tell you she had the posture and body language of a real pissed off woman and she was giving him the silent treatment
[12:31] And suddenly the Latin guy starts crying Takes his napkin starts wiping his nose and eyes by the time we finished our meal and got up to leave about half Hour later. They were all lovey-dovey again, man His little ploy worked yeah Those Latin guys can turn the crying thing on and off at will like a faucet and the latinas the Latin ladies that I've asked about It say reluctantly. Yeah, they can do that All right, and it usually works the first one two or three times They've been caught cheating But eventually even the most forgiving latina throws in the towel and dumps the guy only to hook up with another guy who pulls The same thing now my question for you listeners out there you male listeners This skin you turn the tears on and off like that at will now as for me
[13:17] I like to have a good cry once in a while usually at the nail salon That's where I open my heart to the girls there You know every lady at my salon appreciates when a guy comes out with his feminine side Oh, and if I really want to cry me a river, I'll just put on Titanic Jack Jack And if you believe that Jesus don't wear sandals because where I come from Chicago only wimps softies and mama's boys ever cried in public Now you longtime listeners might remember me saying that in my neighborhood back in Chicago There are only three acceptable reasons for a guy to cry One at funerals and only if a very close relative croaked Two if you were passing a kidney stone and three if you got kicked square in the balls
[14:05] Now that's in stark contrast to the way Latin males manipulate women with their tears and as far as latinas I've spoken to many and they Generally admit to crying a couple of times a week and those ladies were hooked on telling of Ellis You know those soap operas they tear up almost every day. All right. All right I know some of you are gonna say crying is good for you get it out of your system And it probably is but to use the power of crying to suck your girlfriend or wife back into a toxic relationship I don't know. There's something intrinsically wrong with that. Don't you think? That's for me. I think I'll stick with funerals kidney stones and kicks in the cojones Oh, and by the way, if you quiz any Latina as to her favorite tearjerker of all time, it's gonna be
[14:51] Can you guess the Titanic? They run that thing every week on some Latin channel or another and of course, it's in Spanish Which brings us to the so you've got nothing to hide department It's an email that comes from an IT data specialist who says he too will be signing up for my next expat Insider seminar in July. He also says one of the main reasons He's getting out of dodge and coming to Latin America is to have a lower profile and to get off the radar as much As he can it comes from soon-to-be expat. Mr. Corbett He says Johnny I'm so sick of talking to supposed intelligent people who say they've got nothing to hide So they're not worried about privacy or the way people mind your data Fact is I'm an IT data specialist and I can find out
[15:38] Anything about you and I mean anything except what you're actually thinking about but with AI in a few years That's coming too But as for now anything you tap into your iPhone any photo you take anything you put on your computer Turn on your phone scan the news scan anything for any reason I can find out about it So to all my friends and relatives who say I'm paranoid when I talk about what I do and how it is very Wise to lower your profile and try to achieve some modicum of privacy while you still can't I tell them they've got no idea they're marching right off a cliff and They say right back only criminals and dodgy people need to be anonymous They say only tax evaders drug dealers and scammers need a VPN or IP changer or a protected email
[16:28] service like proton mail or start mail and When I tell people who seem a bit concerned themselves that they should spread a little disinformation Problem is that kind of talk scares people too as if spreading Disinformation is a crime. No, it's not. I tell you Johnny every time I have a discussion about privacy or keeping yourself under the radar You get that. I've got nothing to hide so I don't need to do all of that argument That's when you know, the person you're talking to has a very incomplete education Oh, but they'll support that. I've got nothing to hide argument by pointing out This is the good old US of a it's a country of courts and laws. All right, then mr. Corbett says, haha Johnny sometimes when I'm with some slightly intelligent people and I want to make a point and I realize I'm not talking to a brick wall or
[17:21] a gang of sheep I tell them I'm in IT marketing and data analysis and I can show them in five minutes in front of a computer screen Legal tax school hospital doctors documents that are supposed to be private I can pull up almost unlimited amounts of data on them in five minutes In fact, I've made a few non-believers practically crap their britches and I've won a few hundred dollar bets, too And believe me Johnny in the moment, they are totally outraged But instead of getting mad at the true criminals the IRS the FBI CIA NSA Federal Reserve ECB Interpol Google Microsoft Facebook State Department Banks LinkedIn Twitter Instagram Amazon Equifax chain analysis MVD and all the employment agencies hospitals DMV military Alibaba and tax databases, too
[18:10] And at least a hundred others when a person suddenly realizes and you have to prove it to him Usually that everything's on the net. Guess who they get mad at me I've even had friends and relatives who I regret showing that stuff to say that I'm breaking the law. I'm committing a crime Because I can pull up files that are supposed to be protected by privacy laws as if I'm the one who single-handedly Hacked those secure websites and leaked them onto the net. It's kill the messenger, you know Yes, there are many very strong privacy laws And if you noticed every new service and app you sign up for you'll have to check the box that you've read the privacy agreement Which of course you've never read and most people never will so why is it we've got strict privacy laws? And there's no privacy for one reason. There are massive
[18:58] Institutional data breaches at least once a week In fact Johnny if I started to list and explain in detail all the data breaches that happened just within the last year I'd be rambling on for hours and hours. That's why Johnny. I want to tell you this story of a guy I know he's a Bitcoin millionaire and last year when Bitcoin hit its high of around $20,000 suddenly He was an ecstatic multi-millionaire Now Johnny there are places on the net you can go to if you're into the Bitcoin thing One of them is reddit and there are Bitcoin chat rooms blog sites and Facebook groups However in the big adrenaline rush a lot of those newly minted Bitcoin millionaires were pretty stupid They weren't so happy and pumped. They went on the net and bragged about the Lamborghinis and Ferraris They were buying then came the extortions
[19:46] It seems they weren't the only ones on these sites bad guys Eastern Europeans and Russians mostly We're monitoring some of these guys and started calling them up and sending them threatening emails saying they'd have to pay a Bitcoin ransom Or bad things were gonna happen and when someone phoned you up with a Russian accent It scares the hell out of you. So naturally this Bitcoin whale I'm referring to was scared poopless looking over his shoulder all the time So he made it his number one goal to lower his profile and try to get to hell off the radar You know Johnny, it's funny how celebrities and people who have new wealth want everyone to know about it But old wealth and people who are very smart about their wealth Try not to broadcast it at all stay under the radar and just blend in with the common folk when they're out and about
[20:34] So the first thing this guy did was have his lawyer set up a limited liability company It's called an LLC and Latin Americans called an SA corporation a society dot Anonima corporation, it's not in your name. It's in a corporate name and you put all your assets in there including cars boats land Properties businesses even other corporations. It's a corporate name So when people data mine you don't show up now you might still think that it make him easy to track down if someone learned the name of the company and Checked in the municipal or corporate records to see who is on the original paperwork The good news is some states in the US like Nevada, Wyoming and New Mexico and almost all Latin countries Don't require corporations to record their owner on those documents
[21:21] Next step is open a bank account in that corporate SA or LLC corporate name and get credit cards in the corporate name, too they don't have your name on it and it goes without saying that you should pay almost everything in cash and How do you get that cash when it's so difficult these days to go to a bank and withdraw cash? You use the corporate debit or credit card to pull cash out of ATMs in the United States Anyway, you could take up to 800 even a thousand dollars a day in foreign countries two or three hundred a day Next get a new phone number You know our phone records allow phone companies and anyone who subpoenas or hacks them like me to know Everyone whom you've ever spoken with and the GPS location of you and the other person when the call was made
[22:06] So then just phase out using your old phone number Get a new sim chip in the corporate name or even pay someone You know, or you don't know to buy you a sim chip in his or her name Even if it's some bum on the street, it's not illegal and he'll be glad to do it for you for a price I know right now some of you are thinking that's illegal. It's not Next stop using the phone and Google for directions because you know The phone is keeping a record of everywhere. You've been through GPS It'll transmit it to all the apps you're using to one way is to turn off all your geolocation services or turn them off selectively or use one phone with a different phone number just for Directions and the dedicated GPS if you need it
[22:52] next thing if you really want to drastically lower your profile is to sell your house or apartment where you live and put the New one or buy the new one and your corporate name and now that disinformation thing I think it's totally logical to make up fake names for casual interactions and when people ask you on the internet for names in order to get a download of something or Perhaps you might have to sign up to receive a newsletter or some report I'm sure if you go this far you're gonna feel strange about giving people a fake name at least at first and if some reason You get tripped up with your real and fake name The easiest way to smooth it over is to tell people you've had a nickname since childhood Or if you're a musician writer or do any kind of media work at all You could say it's a professional name actors and celebrities use fake names all the time
[23:42] You've seen the letters a ka right that just means otherwise known as think of Dwayne the rock Johnson lady Gaga share and John Wayne otherwise known as Marion Morrison because Wayne knew early on that Marion was not a good name for a cowboy with a 10 gallon hat Alright, the next way to really whittle down your footprint and profile is to create a VPN for internet use That's a virtual private network combined with an internet protocol and IP changer There are a lot of good ones out there, but I don't suggest using a free one because nothing's for nothing You have to sign up for those too. So they're collecting your debts However, if you use a paid VPN or IPN changer, for example, there's a good one from proton mail that particular one
[24:31] It costs around 40 to 50 bucks a year It makes it appear as if you and your computer are in a country. That's different from where you actually are Next no matter how much you're worth or how many hundreds or thousands of Bitcoin you have Buy and drive a boring car and ditch those vanity license plates today Oh, and I know it's all the rage But don't get any tattoos or funky body piercings And if you do make sure they're on or near your private parts So the rest of the world including surveillance cameras don't pick them up when you're out for a stroll Next set up a private mailbox and remailing service in your corporate name Another thing in this day and age of facial recognition software
[25:16] You can fool it a bit by just wearing sunglasses and having some facial hair. Sorry ladies that doesn't apply to you Well most of you anyway And if you're really worried about getting spotted you might want to buy some of those noise Cancellation headphones that are all the rage these days those who fool facial recognition for sure next use Encryption software as much as possible and dump the usual suspects Gmail Yahoo and ditch social media But that goes without saying and finally sign up for one of those encrypted email services that you have to pay for Don't use any of the free ones because nothing's for nothing for internet searches Don't use Google use duck duck go or start page then after you've done most of those things I've just mentioned go on the internet and for 200 bucks
[26:03] You could hire a hacker to do a data search and find out everything he can about you for sure He'll uncover lots of data on you But it'll be time stamped and you'll find out quickly if your efforts have paid off Hopefully you'll get to see the dates and times when the data stream on you trickled down to nothing Then you know you've accomplished your mission So Johnny there you have that Bitcoin whales tips and suggestions on how to get the hell off the radar You probably realized by now those are tips for people living in the US or in first world countries However, unfortunately being a data miner myself I know you can win some privacy battles for a while, but you won't win the war But if you move to a third world country or place like Latin America You can truly set the clock back to the 1970s or 80s without much difficulty at all
[26:52] But to do that properly and efficiently you'll need a Latin lawyer as your proxy Just try to ask your US lawyer if you could use his address as your proxy business and personal address See what he says he'd likely say he can't because it's too much of a liability But in the third world places like Latin America lawyers do that all the time. It's part of the service They provide for all their gringo clients Your Latin lawyer will gladly use one of his corporations or open one up for you that will allow you to do banking internet service by cars and land Operate a business create contracts, etc. Etc.
