#916 – The Expat Files: EMF Exposure, Language Trends, and Stem Cell Treatments in Mexico

Show #916 · December 22, 2019

Johnny Mueller discusses EMF meters, the overuse of 'awesome', and stem cell treatments in Latin America

Episode Summary

In this episode of The Expat Files, Johnny Mueller discusses the importance of measuring electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the home environment. He highlights the risks of high EMF exposure from common household appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, and routers, which can emit levels far exceeding the US EPA's recommended safe limit of 10 milliwatts per meter squared. Johnny recommends the GQ 390 EMF meter for its affordability and ease of use, noting that it can be purchased on Amazon for around $100. He also explains how to use the meter to identify and mitigate high EMF exposure in devices such as computers, monitors, and portable solar generators.

Johnny further explores the topic of electric field strength (EF) and how it differs from EMF. He measures EF levels around various devices, including LED lights, fluorescent bulbs, wireless keyboards, and hairdryers, noting that some readings can reach up to 3000 volts per meter, which is significantly above the EPA's safe limit. He expresses skepticism about the reliability of the EPA's guidelines, citing past failures in regulating harmful substances. Johnny suggests that while some devices emit dangerous levels of EF, the exposure is typically short-lived, and practical solutions like maintaining distance from these devices can mitigate risks.

The episode also includes a discussion on the overuse of the word 'awesome' and its frequent use among younger generations. Johnny critiques this trend, suggesting that it has become a cliché and lacks genuine meaning. He also shares listener emails about stem cell treatments in Mexico, noting that most people report positive results, though some have not seen immediate effects. Johnny encourages listeners to consider these treatments as an option for health improvement, while acknowledging the variability in outcomes.

Finally, Johnny addresses the issue of dirty electricity and its sources, emphasizing the importance of using a proper EMF meter to measure field strengths. He explains that cheaper meters only measure in two dimensions and do not scan up to high frequencies like Wi-Fi and cell phone signals, making the GQ390 meter a better choice for accurate measurements. He also mentions the limitations of smart meters, which emit dirty EMF in short bursts, and suggests using Faraday covers to block emissions. Johnny concludes by encouraging listeners to get an EMF meter and check their environments for potential risks.

[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came out to play and now I wonder Hello there all you ex-pat wannabes. I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here. So let's get started You know ever since I started talking about dirty electricity and that EMF meter that I recommend and I use myself I've been getting a lot of emails from people saying they picked up that meter They are so very happy with it. In fact more than a few listeners have said the thing is rather scary

[00:48] No, not the thing itself, but the results but you know, most of these people are not Engineers or scientific types and they want to know a little bit more about the dirty electricity thing in late language Not in science speak because you know when you buy a meter like that or any kind of EMF meter if you don't know that much about magnetic fields Electricity and the way the fields and waves are expressed and the way they interact Then you've got all those graphs and numbers that are displayed on the meter Well, it can get pretty confusing even though that GQ EMF 390 meter that I recommend is really one of the most user friendly meters I've seen and believe me the designation GQ has nothing to do with gentlemen's quarterly Anyway, the designers of that meter and they're in Portland, Oregon. So it's a US product

[01:35] They thought of everything and they do a really good job of explaining it and though it's been simplified I don't want to say dumb down enough for the average person I have to say I don't think an average person even knows what the hell we're talking about here with EMF dirty electrical fields We might as well be talking about brain surgery or Bitcoin and the blockchain that stuff Just buzzes over the head of the average slug except in the case of dirty EMF where it buzzes right through your head But about my favorite EMF meter, it's simple and easy to use All right, but still it can give you so much information your eyes will glaze over. So today we're gonna make it easy today I'm gonna give you a little rundown on what to look for and how to walk around your house and check the fields and How to read the numbers correctly. That means find the hot spots of dirty electricity In other words, the places you ought to stay out of but first, let me read one of the many emails that came in

[02:25] Talking about this meter. So it's from Horatio. He says Johnny what up, bro No, he didn't really say that. Yes, he did. Anyway, he says thanks for all your info. I bought that GQ EMF meter and it is definitely Insert pregnant pause here and then he uses the a word No, not the one that ends with hole, but that beat the death infinitely overused word awesome All right Let me digress a second and tell you why I hate the a word All you have to do is look up the word off the very root of the a word Well, the Merriam Webster dictionary says it's an emotion variously combining dread Veneration and wonder that's inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime

[03:12] For example, nature's wonders of the world inspire people with awe. In other words, they're awesome That means for example, if you're walking on the golf course and lightning strikes your partner and kills them man That's awesome But winning five bucks in a scratch-off lottery ticket is not awesome Nor is that turquoise jellish nail polish your better half just had installed at the beauty parlor even if it did cost 50 bucks Nothing awe-inspiring about that Nor should the word awesome be your retort if someone offers to buy you a happy meal Tell me I want to know why does the average person on the street use the a word 20 times a day It's as bad as the people who say like 20 times a day The a word and like seem to be the words of choice for people under 30 these days

[04:01] Now just ask any English teacher or professor and I'll tell you the word awesome by definition is to be used very sparingly In reality awe-inspiring events only happen once or twice a year. Maybe for some people maybe never That's why the massive overuse of the a word rubs me the wrong way and the overuse of the word like not so much Since it has no deeper or more profound meaning like the a word does it's just a filler and by the way Don't get me started on the word, dude. No upset about that. But back to Horatio's email He says I bought that GQ EMF meter and it is oh And just one more thing along with lots of emails on the EMF meter thing I'm getting a lot of emails from people who've had the stem cell procedures done south of the border

[04:49] Those emails are trickling in seems like every day now You might remember on the last show or was it two shows ago? I read an email from a guy who had the stem cell treatments done And he said he hadn't felt any effects yet after a couple of months Now, you know, the results are highly variable, but that's an oddball case according to all the emails I've been getting I'd say nine out of ten of the reports that come back to me That is from people who've actually gone and dropped the dough on the treatment are extremely positive For example, the email I just received about an hour ago. Let me read a little part of it here He says hey Johnny about those stem cells I had an IV for my whole body and then some injected directly into the spine about four months later So now it's been five months the treatment did wonders from my back

[05:37] Then he says I do a bunch of other stuff to certain exercises in the book pain-free by Pete Eggo squee it talks about changing the energy fields in and around the body and that's of great benefit Anyway, he says after the stem cells I've in fact gone back to loading and unloading my truck and dragging around 300 pound displays on the street I get a kick out of it He says after not being able to stand and walk for most of the year So anyway, that's a good example of some of the emails have been getting regarding people who've gone and done the stem cell thing Now I know it's expensive and insurance doesn't pay for it but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than having a joint replacement with a hell of a lot less risk and If it works as it's done in so many people a hell of a tremendous upside, but alas insurance won't pay

[06:27] Well, what do you expect? All right now said about that. Let's talk about that EMF problem dirty electricity Yeah electricity. That's a Chicagoism while upper-class snobs might say Electricity down on the streets of Chi-town. We say electricity now I have to say when I first picked up this EMF meter, I thought this thing is really small and light I hope it performs like the specs say Mine is called the GQ EMF dash 390 You can get it on Amazon for around a hundred bucks or so It's the one I use exclusively a note I've checked out all the other EMF meters available on Amazon and other places and it's the absolute Best-buy for your money. It does everything that the $300 meters do and in spite of all the things it does. It's actually very easy to use

[07:16] Oh, and when you check it out on Amazon, there's a great little YouTube video It's only around four minutes long that very nicely explains how to use it and the important readings You should be monitoring and it talks about the maximum safe levels that you should be shooting for around the house Oh and let me repeat once again. I make nothing off of this There's no click-through on my website. So I get some kind of commission none of that now when you're talking about electric fields There are three fields you have to monitor and the cool thing about this little meter Is that it displays all three of those fields at once and here's a breakdown The first field is called the RF field or the radial frequency field It's measured in milliwatts per meter squared and the main source of RF fields cell towers

[08:03] So you'd want to be too close to one of those I'd say personally two blocks is too close now the US EPA Environmental protection agency says that if you're in or around RF fields, that is radio frequency fields The human body should be exposed to no more than 10 milliwatts per meter squared Alright, so keep that in mind 10 milliwatts per meter squared. So knowing that right now I'm walking around the apartment. I'm in and there's a table lamp about three feet away It's got an LED light in it of about 12 watts and I'm holding the meter about three inches from the bulb now Guess what it's reading remember. We said 10 milliwatts per meter squared is the comfortable limit for humans I'm thinking it's much the same for dogs cats ragga toneros and rappers, too

[08:50] So anyway with the meter a couple of inches from the bulb. I'm reading between two and three Well within the safe limit. All right now I'm walking into the kitchen and guess what? When I place the meter about a foot from the refrigerator when the compressor is running. It's reading 500 milliwatts per meter squared That's 50 times the acceptable limit and when I back away around four feet, we're back below 10 Just fine, and then I try the microwave oven. I switch it on about a foot from the door. It's reading 800 That's 80 times the acceptable limit. Are you getting this now in regards to the microwave? Once I'm around five to six feet away from it. It drops down below 10 again Alright now I'm walking over to my portable solar power generator. I just flipped it on. I'm about a half a foot away

[09:40] I'm reading 30 three times the acceptable limit, but when I back off about two feet, we're below 10 again. Oh And here's a surprise. I have one of those UPS is it stands for uninterruptible power supply a little battery backup for the computer You know I'm talking about they cost about 50 bucks and my brand name is trip light now Who would have thunk that thing's really putting out the RF six inches away around two hundred twenty times the limit But once I'm around four feet away, it's well below ten Same thing when I get close to the router within a couple of inches It's putting out around 200 which is 20 times the limit So I know to stay a couple of feet away from that thing now for my computer set up I've got a 40-inch monitor regular TV screen plugged into an HDMI port in my computer

[10:29] And I sit about five feet away from it and when I put the meter within a couple inches of the screen It's reading something like three hundred thirty times the limit But as soon as I get about three feet away it drops down below ten again, and I've got this HP computer That's about a year and a half old and when I put the meter right up to the keyboard It's reading about four hundred same thing when I put the meter up to the screen Forty times the safe limit and when I back off around two feet. I'm back in the safe zone again below ten all right now I'm walking around the bedroom checking for radio frequency. That's our app Remember we're checking three different fields now the first one being the RF or radio frequency field We'll get to the other two measurements in a little while Anyway, I see as I'm walking through the bedroom checking out all the areas on the bed

[11:17] It's all well below ten except for the ceiling fan. Which is registering around a hundred ten times the limit now That's at close range around three inches, but as soon as I get a foot and a half away It's down within normal acceptable limits under ten all right the final thing We're gonna check on the first field radio frequency field is the Bluetooth headphone setup by using and you know I was always thinking in the back of my head this thing probably really putting out some dirty electricity And I'll probably have to get rid of it But the field strength on my Bluetooth headphones does not go above ten Even when I bring the meter over to the little USB dongle that plugs into the computer it still stays under ten So maybe I'll keep the Bluetooth headphones in mic after all you know

[12:03] I can't believe they call that USB plug-in module at dongle or whatever they call it couldn't they have picked a more adult name oh? Well anyway, it's stupid enough to be easy to remember Okay, enough said about field number one all right. Let's look at field number two of three now That's EF or electric field strength Now that's always measured in volts per meter and according to the EPA That's the Environmental Protection Agency Who have historically dropped the ball over and over again, so we really don't know whether to trust them or not Their published data says the human body should not be exposed for extended periods to EF Electric field forces of more than 50 volts per meter That's 50 volts per meter now

[12:51] You should know there are two types of electric fields DC electric fields of AC We're worried about the AC fields the ones that are alternating the DC fields We won't worry about too much that would be static electricity You know when you touch a cat or walk across a dry carpet Static electricity is momentary with no lasting effects unless of course it happens to be a lightning strike Then yeah might not have time to worry all right So let's do some EF measurements around the apartment back at my LED lamp again. I'm four inches from it Wow 2,000 volts per meter that's 40 times the safe EPA limit All right, I know no one stands four inches away from an LED light right So I'm backing off from it now, and when it gets below the safe limit. That's 50. I'll let you know

[13:42] Okay, almost there. It's at 30 right now, and I'm four feet away from the bulb so now I know better right good rule of thumb stay at least four feet away from an LED light and believe me I've got nothing against LED lights I love the fact that they're really energy savers and they give out a pretty nice natural light unlike fluorescent bulbs Which always make me feel like I'm in a depressing government institutional building or a hospital Speaking of ugly depressing fluorescent bulbs of which there are tens of millions here in Latin America I'm gonna walk over to one right now. It's in the kitchen I'm about four inches away from it now, and it's putting out 1500 volts per meter that's about 30 times the EPA guideline highly dangerous So then you might ask what's dangerous about it

[14:29] Well, there are countless peer-reviewed studies that show strong electric fields alter and damage DNA and RNA causing mutations and Mutations are the root of birth defects and cancer All right back to our test and now I'm about three feet away and the meters drop down to around 25 So you've got pretty much the same rule of thumb for LED lights and ugly fluorescent bulbs, too When you get about three to four feet away, you're absolutely safe Oh, and by the way, we're talking about LED lights now that screw into regular light bulb sockets They're the dirty ones not LED lights that are run strictly off DC For example, the ones in your car or in a flashlight oddly enough. Those are very safe and clean Turns out what sprays out all that dirty electricity is the switching circuit inside the light bulb that turns the AC house

[15:21] Current to DC so don't go trashing the LED lights themselves trash the circuit that's converting the AC to DC And you know, you find out all kinds of interesting things with this meter For example, I use a wireless keyboard on occasion a logitech and what do you do when you're using one of those things? Well, normally you're at a desktop or it's sitting right on your lap Well when it's sitting on your lap, you better look out because mines reading 1500 volts per meter 30 times the EPA acceptable limit that means guys and gals using wireless keyboards are slowly simmering their privates and that goes for plunking away at your keyboard or tablet When it's on your lap, too, and then knowing what we know about corruption in government You might ask are the EPA numbers the Environmental Protection Agency's numbers even legit

[16:10] I mean look how the FDA gives a pass to so many horrible drugs and Vaccines well, we do need something to go by so for this discussion. We'll pretend they know what the hell they're talking about So anyway, as it turns out for my logitech wireless keyboard I've got the meter right here and it shows I have to be something like two feet away to get into the safe range Less than 50 volts per meter. Come on. How are you gonna use a keyboard two foot away from you? So as it turns out, it was a big waste of money and I should just toss the thing in a dumpster Oh, and I just checked out my girlfriend's hairdryer. And when you're something like half a foot away from it, which is normal It's reading get this 3000 volts per meter that's 60 times the EPA safe limit However, you know, you're not being subjected to those dirty fields more than a couple minutes a day

[16:58] So it's your call But I'd say if you were working as a stylist in a beauty salon Trying to find a way to shield those things would be something worth thinking about it wouldn't be hard though Who's really thinking that far ahead, right? Hey now, there's a cool business idea By the way, you've got the same problem with all the power drills and saws out there in the market today Used to be before around 1980 the structural body of most power tools was made out of aluminum or some kind of metal Which offers tremendous EMF shielding, but today those things are really spraying some dirty EMF Alright now let's talk about the last electrical field. We have to concern ourselves with that's the EMF field electromagnetic field measured in milligos With the EPA saying the maximum you should be exposed to for any length of time is 2.5

[17:45] milligos Then walking around the house. I realized that many appliances put out more than 50 That's when you're up close to them Then when you get three to four feet away, they drop down below the 2.5 normal acceptable range And the worst culprits your refrigerator when the compressor is on your microwave and your air conditioner All right, let's have a little walk around the apartment to see if the usual suspects are truly that dirty Let's see here within a couple of inches of my led lamp. I've got five milligos That's two times the epa recommended limit and when I get about a half a foot away It's almost zero milligos on the meter Now again when I get close to my logitech wireless keyboard At the level of the keys where you type it's putting out around 20 milligos

[18:33] About eight times the recommended epa environmental protection agency limit man I'll tell you that's heading for the dumpster or as a christmas gift for someone. I don't like All right And now i'm measuring a couple of inches away from my 40 inch led tv that I use as a monitor That thing's putting out about 25 milligos about 10 times more than the epa recommendation, too But then as predicted about two feet from the tv It's almost down to zero. So no problem As long as you stay at least a couple of feet away from it Oh and as for my laptop computer whether i'm taking a measurement from the keyboard side of it or from underneath Where it would be sitting on your lab. I'm still getting around 20 to 25 milligos Seven to ten times the epa recommended limit

[19:20] But then if you just back off about a foot you're back down to nearly zero again Then the question is how do you deal with that if you're using a computer all day long? Yep, it's the same thing for your cell phone. For example, right now i'm on a smartphone and i'm looking at a youtube I'm reading the graph on the meter and it's putting out spikes of around 120 milligos That's about 50 times the recommended epa limit and i've got the meter right up to the phone And that's where your head's gonna be when you're talking though Not during a youtube because you're watching that from a foot or so away and that's just fine Though the hand that's holding it's gonna get bombarded Still that's much better than having it bombard the side of your head and your gray matter Just be aware that when you're talking on the phone your gray matter on that side of your head's getting bombarded with

[20:09] 20 times as much as the epa safe limit now Imagine exposing yourself to that for hours and hours a day The latest stats saying kids are on their cell phones an average of five hours a day and young adults An average of three and a half hours a day with baby boomers on the phone the least amount of time An hour and 40 minutes a day though. A lot of boomers got a head start on brain damage being that they live through the 60s So the question is what do you do? How do you avoid getting your brain fried by your cell phone? Well the quick and dirty ways to just plug in some earbuds But the majority of people just don't do that too inconvenient though. Believe me. I know right now There are products being developed that'll shield you from your phone Oh, and there's another really good effective way to shield yourself from rf when using your cell phone

[20:55] That is getting that adapter where you can plug an ethernet cable into your router and then to your phone There is an adapter for that, you know But it really is a pain in the ass imagine having a wire hanging from your phone 24 7 And of course that's only feasible when you're at home or your office and obviously people aren't doing it They're not even aware of it and probably only one in ten thousand people has even heard of that But believe me as more and more of these symptoms pop up new products will be forthcoming that mitigate the emf Meanwhile, we're getting bathed in this stuff 24 7 so in effect you're on your own That's why you really need one of these emf meters and I know that even at a hundred bucks It could be out of your price range But then you could always phone up a like-minded person and split the cost or maybe you got three friends who?

[21:41] Listen to this show or gary null or shows like it and are really on point about these kinds of health issues Oh and one more thing I just put my meter up to the little dongle that's connected to my computer Transmitting to my bluetooth earphones now and that thing's really putting out dirty emf about 10 times the recommended amount However, when I put the meter up to the headset that i'm wearing I get a reading but it's not going over the 2.5 Safe limit now i'm using a pretty expensive plantronics headset was around 150 bucks I'm trying this new microphone out because people have been complaining about the audio in my shows lately So do let me know if this show sounds any better It's the first time i'm using this headset and I was worried that being its bluetooth It was going to put out some heavy emf and it's not at least not at the headset

[22:28] However at the angle of the dongle. Yes, but not at the actual headset However, just the other day. I tested some bluetooth earbuds that I use when i'm out running or exercising And those things are just spewing dirty emf Hmm. There's another christmas present for someone. I don't like Now that's not to say all bluetooth devices are putting out a bunch of garbage emf Obviously, it's not the case with the headset i'm wearing right now It's something you really have to check with every individual bluetooth device that you have So anyway, now when i'm doing a workout I listen to podcasts and audiobooks with earbuds that plug into my ipod So i'm not using bluetooth with that setup anymore By the way any of you listeners out there who have those expensive apple earbuds I think they're something like 150 to 200 bucks, right?

[23:16] I know they're bluetooth So i'd be interested to find out how much dirty electricity those things put out And don't forget the bluetooth and all the other gadgets in your car check it out and let me know But here's something else to keep in mind when you're using your emf meter to check on the field strengths Make sure you slowly rotate that meter with your wrist because those fields are three dimensional They've all got an x y and z axis a 3d component and that's one of the reasons these meters cost 100 bucks or so The electronics and sensors are very sophisticated because they're always taking measurements in three planes Sure, you can get a cheap meter from amazon or a lot of other places Ranging anywhere from 15 to 75 bucks, but they won't be measuring in three dimensions only two

[24:02] And they don't scan all the way up to the very high frequencies beyond two and a half gigahertz And that's the frequency where wi-fi cell towers and cell phones are operating If you're worried about this stuff, you really have to know that information Now to me the cool thing about this meter the gq390 Is that it scans the bandwidths all the way up to 10 gigahertz and the cheaper ones don't Oh and one last thing about dirty emf you've heard all the stories about smart meters and how they're notorious for spewing out dirty emf They do it as they spurt bursts of data back to the electric company The thing is if you've got a smart meter outside or in your garage and you walk up to it and put your little emf Meter right alongside of it. You'll get some readings, but they'll be below the epa's recommended limit doesn't make sense

[24:49] How can that be when those things are supposed to be so dirty? Well, they do spew out loads of dirty emf trash, but only a couple of minutes a day So chances are when you're checking the emf levels, it'll look normal and acceptable, but don't let that fool you Those things are very dirty when they're spewing out the data to the electric company So when might that happen? Well, just put your meter up next to it and leave the speaker function on and you'll hear it beep loud and clear Especially if it happens at night when things are quiet in the hood and you can hear a pin drop That's another great thing about this meter. It's got an audible alarm Oh and by the way, did you know there are some companies that sell Faraday covers for your smart meter? That means no more worries about extraneous dumps of data nor blasts of dirty emf Of course, the electric company won't like it very much because they won't be receiving any data

[25:38] But so what it's on your property and you can do anything you want to it because you're not going inside the meter It goes on the outside. It's a form fitting cover I think it's a damn good hack and a middle finger salute to the electric company And I really don't think there's a thing they can do about it Sure, they can come and try to take it off But technically that's stealing because they're on your property you bought it It's yours and it's got nothing to do with the guts of the meter itself. You gotta love a good hack, huh? Oh and one last thing I said that already right well one last one last thing People always talk about dirty electricity coming from ac outlets Well, I checked them all in my house and they don't put out dirty emf in any of the three fields we're monitoring Unless you've got something plugged into them like a phone charger

[26:24] Then they could put out some pretty dirty emf So it's recommended you stay or sleep at least three feet away from one of those outlets if it's got a charger plugged in So from what I can see your four biggest problem areas are your microwave oven Wifi router laptop and your smartphone my recommendation get an emf meter check it out for yourself I'm gonna start doing something about it or just keep chugging away like 98 percent of the rest of the human race and Hope for the best and hope the old saying pans out ignorance is bliss All right.
