Episode Summary
In this episode of The Expat Files, Johnny Mueller addresses a question from a listener, MJ, about whether Canada is worse than the US in terms of politics, economics, and quality of life. Johnny responds by sharing insights from his experience with expat seminars, where he often sees a high number of Canadian attendees. He notes that despite Canada's reputation for being more tolerant and friendly, many Canadians are dissatisfied with the country's high taxes, the national health care system, and the cost of living, especially in cities like Vancouver. Johnny highlights the challenges of the Canadian health care system, including long waiting times for surgeries and the requirement to stay in Canada for at least six months a year to maintain health care benefits. He also discusses the appeal of moving to Latin America for expats, noting that health care is significantly cheaper there and that many private insurance plans have age limits for coverage.
Johnny then delves into the age limits and costs associated with private health care plans in Latin America, emphasizing the importance of signing up before reaching the age limit. He contrasts the high costs of emergency care in the United States with the relatively lower costs in Latin America, highlighting the financial risks for Americans without insurance. He also touches on the topic of taxes in the U.S., noting how they are often disguised as other fees to avoid public backlash. Finally, he addresses a listener's email about umbrella insurance and comments on the absurdity of mask mandates in virtual meetings.
In the next segment, Johnny critiques government mandates requiring employees to wear masks during virtual meetings, calling it absurd and comparing it to wearing two masks while driving. He expresses frustration with the government's handling of the pandemic and the economy, noting the increasing frequency of major US companies filing for bankruptcy. He warns that the economic system is on the verge of collapse and advises listeners to prepare by investing in gold, silver, Bitcoin, and holding cash outside of banks. He also suggests that third-world banks may be more stable than first-world banks due to their lack of exposure to complex financial derivatives.
Finally, Johnny discusses the differences in banking systems between the United States and Latin America. He highlights how the U.S. banking system gives depositors a false sense of security due to the FDIC and the Federal Reserve, allowing banks to be reckless. In contrast, Latin American banks have minimal FDIC-like insurance, and their stability is often judged by the longevity of the bank and the background of its owners. Johnny emphasizes that banks with strong, long-standing ownership in industries like agriculture or commodities are more reliable. He also warns about the risks of holding money in U.S. banks, as they can be seized by creditors or the government through legal actions. He shares personal experiences of expats facing such issues and discusses the current state of air travel and flight prices, noting that due to the pandemic, there are now many affordable international flights, especially with layovers in Mexico City. He recommends checking flight prices regularly and using a tool called the 'Great Escape Tool' to find the best deals.

[00:00] South of the border down Mexico way That's where I fell in love when the stars above came up to play and now I wonder Hello there all you ex-pat wannabes. I'm Johnny Mueller and you're listening to the expat files living in Latin America The show that tells you just what it's like to live work play and or retire down here in Latin America It's a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the great and it's all right here So let's get started first a couple of emails. This one's from MJ He says Johnny some weeks ago in passing you mentioned that Canada is no better than the US and worse in some ways Could you elaborate? I don't follow politics finances Cetera of other countries as much as I should for example, are they as autocratic and how much choice do people have in Canada?
[00:51] I appreciate your programs info and wit so much best to you MJ all right MJ just a little fact here I've been doing my expat insiders seminars for something like 10 years now And I always have Canadians in attendance And you know if you compare the population of Canada to the population in the US all things equal I should be seeing a lot fewer Canadians But I'm seeing twice as many Canadians as their population would statistically suggest and naturally the question always comes up with the other attendees Why are all these Canadians here after all isn't Canada sort of the USA light on top of that aren't Canadians Known to be more tolerant less wired more likable more friendly and easygoing than their stateside counterparts That's you know the universal Canadian stereotype right which is really basically true based on my experience
[01:40] Anyway, you'd think then no matter what goes down in Canada politically and economically anyway Canadians would just sort of say well, let's go with the flow Canada's good It ain't what it used to be but what the hey, so what if we pay 60 even? 70% of our incomes in taxes after all we got that great national health care system right well You see that's the one big thing. I keep hearing over and over From Canadian seminar attendees then there's all those emails I get from Canadians to who politely complain Not just about the national health care system either. They say it's not the place they grew up in in fact You'll find the cost of living in Canada, especially housing twice What it is in the US and in some cities where rich Chinese have piled in it's much worse
[02:27] I have heard that over and over again and I've seen proof So for one Canadians have higher taxes than Americans not that Canadians aren't Americans You have that discussion too once in a while because they are part of North America, right? Normally the convention is to say that people from the US are Americans and Canadians are well just Canadian in fact, you know, technically Mexicans are Americans as well as everyone who lives in Central America. I mean after all they're Central Americans aren't they and you know if you live in Argentina Brazil Paraguay Colombia, Venezuela those countries south of Panama They're Americans to South American. Hell the name of the continent is South America Though it is funny. You'll hear Latins refer to us gringos and expats as a maricanos and only once in a great while Will you hear a Latino try to make a joke out of it? He'll laugh and say yo soy a maricano tambien
[03:18] I'm an American too, but I digress and wait too soon in the show. I digressed didn't I? Hmm. So we're off to that kind of start, huh? Oh Now here's the thing I hear from Canadians with plan B's all the time They tell me you think your country's in financial straits. Ours is bankrupt. They tell me just like in the states. They have a huge Unsustainable debt to GDP ratio. They tell me the government sold off all its gold reserves with rich Chinese coming into places like Vancouver completely exploding the real estate prices making it almost impossible for any average Canadian to get a mortgage They tell me in those big cities It's almost impossible to get a halfway decent property for under a million bucks And then there's the Canadian national health care system to which some Canadians refer to as a spectacular failure
[04:06] Whereas others say it's great However from my personal observations and anecdotes coming from the mouths of many many expat and want to be expat Canadians They're all pretty much on the same page when they say that as long as you're in pretty good health The system is great. It's when you need some kind of surgery or any really heavy-duty procedure You end up on a waiting list that lasts months even years the whole system the whole bureaucracy turns into a nightmare Why do you think so many hundreds of thousands of Canadians go to the US to get their? Extensive medical procedures like hip replacements heart eye and kidney surgeries, etc Why do thousands of Canadians go to the states and pay cash for something they could get for nothing up in Canada If they just hung in there for the waiting period Though we can argue the pros and the cons on that system all day long
[04:55] The other part of the national health care thing that Canadians are so upset with is the fact they passed Legislation that says you must remain in Canada at least six months a year Or they'll cut you off the national health care system And that by itself has thrown a huge wrench into the works of Canadians who've got a plan B going as well as those Who've already gotten the hell out of Dodge and people who are thinking about it That means if they want to get the hell out of Dodge and leave Canada permanently They have to somehow arrange to get good quality health care insurance Something most of them are absolutely not prepared to do because they never had to face that conundrum before and in the case of moving To Latin America. It's not that health care is expensive It's dirt cheap by any standard for a hundred bucks a month. You can get triple-a platinum card virtually no deductible coverage
[05:42] But remember if you're a geezer and you're planning to kick the hell out of Dodge or you're out of Dodge already Most every private health care plan in Latin America and in most other places the world too The plans have an age limit and for most plans it varies between 59 and 65 years of age Of course once you're on the plan you're good for life and some plans till age 99 The trick is to sign on before you hit that age limit So for example, if you're in Panama shopping for a private health care plan and their age limit to get on board is 59 And you're 62 your shit out of luck. Then what you pay as you go A lot of people end up doing that and though to Americans that is stateside Americans That would be a very scary proposition because just a couple of days in the emergency room in the states could set you back
[06:27] 50 to 100 grand and if you don't have insurance and it's out of pocket that could bankrupt you However, all of us gringles and expats living here in Latin America No a day in a private hospital emergency room here will only set you back Maybe a grant still no small potatoes Especially if you're stuck there for a couple of days or get stuck in intensive care, which is also about a grand a day imagine that a Grand a day in the ICU Meanwhile in the US the average ICU charge per day is seven to fifteen thousand dollars I just looked it up and with this covid thing if you're on a ventilator 20 to 40 thousand bucks a day So naturally for most stateside Americans a week or two in the ICU could completely bankrupt you unless of course You've got really good insurance coverage
[07:14] But still the copay on that hospital say could bankrupt the average American who has been shown just recently to have less than a thousand Bucks and available cash. That's the reason for the $500 a week free money By the way without that half the families in the states wouldn't be able to pay their rent But you knew that already right so anyway all in all most Canadians who've left the country Tell me that it costs from 25 to 50 percent more to live in Canada than it does to live a similar lifestyle in the states Even though the states is a place where practically every working person already pays 50 percent or more in Aggregate taxes again if you don't believe that send me an email to expat files at gmail.com And I'll send you a list of a hundred taxes. You didn't even know you were paying it will shock you and piss you off
[08:00] By the way if you get that list you'll noticed almost none of them are called taxes And there's a good reason for that People are repulsed and have a visceral hate for the word tax Going back to before even the Boston Tea Party the fact is in the old horse and buggy days Tax collectors had one of the most dangerous jobs on earth and many many of them were strung up killed and tired and feathered So you can almost understand why governments want to come up with new terms for the way They pick your pocket like fees concessions levies tolls tariffs duties surcharges those words sound better And they're psychologically less repulsive than that hated word tax The thing is though if you're a very young person you were born into this system of ultra high taxation And you accept it as the norm for young people that's life. That's just the way it is
[08:48] However, there are still millions of baby boomers out there like me who remember the world the way it used to be a freer Cheaper safer more open and infinitely more private world a world where big brother and 24 seven surveillance only existed in fictional Dystopian novels oh and another thing talk about big brother and the lack of personal control you have you can only get a handgun in Canada for three reasons if you're a collector a Target shooter or need one for your job though rifles you can get because a lot of hunting in Canada Though having a handgun legally for personal protection is pretty much out of a question So there you have an image a number of reasons why candidate is even worse off politically financially and in the personal Restriction of freedom department than the US and the US well, we know it's unfixable. It's game over
[09:37] You've only got so much time to get your plan be together and get the hell out of dodge It's already becoming extremely difficult to get both your ass and your assets out of that Just think what it's gonna be like in a year or two when big-time inflation Slaps you in the face and the US dollar really does become toilet paper then there's the cove idiot vaccine Are you gonna get it? I'm not even though my paperwork might say I did after all, you know, this is Latin America Alright, then we have this email from mr. A a lawyer from Atlanta, Georgia He wants to straighten me out on the insurance topic that I spoke about last week Hey, you know, I can't always be right. I can't always bad a thousand. He says Johnny I think you misunderstand the purpose and coverage of umbrella insurance
[10:23] It doesn't cover damages or losses suffered by the policy holder It's a liability policy to protect the holder from claims others have against the holder umbrella insurance It's not useful for damage to homes cars, etc from storms accidents stuff like that That's what the required other parts of the policies are for Anyway, Johnny still loving your show and yes, it's a great time to be living your plan B. Thank Nietzsche I'm RVing it in the forest full-time But even with this kind of lifestyle, there's the occasional nonsense It's just hilarious to see people wearing masks while exercising outside or in cars driving alone Might as well wear an idiot sign smack dab on your forehead signed. Mr. A Esquire attorney at law Atlanta. All right, mr
[11:12] A thanks for that. But there's even more from the world has gone mad department just caught this article today on zero hedge It says Wisconsin government agencies mandate face mask use for virtual meetings like zoom What are you getting this? It says the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Told its employees that effective August 1st. They must wear masks for Teleconferences the with Preston Cole director of the Department of Natural Resources saying in an email to all employees quote Wear your mask even if you're at home to participate in virtual meetings such as zoom or other video conferencing platforms Why because it sets the safety example, which shows you as a public service employee care about the safety and health of others
[12:03] Are you getting this so these government co-videots are saying now Government employees must use masks while video conferencing all by their lonesome I guess that would be equivalent to wearing two masks while driving alone in your car You know what I say fire every in one of these government co-videots Oh and if ridiculously moronic pronouncements like that from government dickheads We're supposed to have half a brain if pronouncements like that Don't push you over the edge and into the state of mind that you have to get that plan be going and get the hell out of dodge Well, then you just keep ordering from the menu at the Titanic cafe because you know what not everyone's gonna fit in the lifeboats And the kitchen on the Titanic is still open for business
[12:48] Meanwhile, have you been noticing like I have on even the mass media sites Not a single day goes by without an announcement of some big well-known US franchise or chain Filing or getting ready to file for bankruptcy companies with household names who have been around 50 even a hundred years every single day Now I'm seeing that news. It's not even a surprise or a big deal anymore. I understand in Vegas They even have a betting platform set up with odds and percentages where you can bet on the likelihood of certain major companies going bust Hey, you know when you're in Vegas, you bet on anything, right? Well now you can bet on the collapse of the system even make a lot of money on it Though the irony of that is if you win you get paid with collapsing inflated funny money If you think this is gonna end well, but the government's got this under control, man
[13:34] You better have that life jacket on you know A lot smarter people than me are saying at least 50% of businesses in six months will be dead in the water forever If you think the economy will ever get back to the old normal, you better double up on your Prozac The thing is you may be very informed and quite smart I'm sure it half to three-quarters of you have a plan be in mind, but you really haven't done too much about it Reminds me way back when when gold was 250 bucks an ounce, you know all my life I've been pretty lucky and when you know people who are lucky you often ask them for advice because hey you think they might Know something you don't and that's the way my life is spent people are always asking me for advice But only a tiny percentage of them ever take it again Like way back when gold was 250 bucks an ounce people would say Johnny. I've got an extra grand or ten grand
[14:22] What should I invest in back then before crypto? I'd always say you can't go wrong with gold It's only gonna go up as the dollar gets destroyed through inflation But alas almost no one took my advice though that ten grand invested gold in the early 2000s would be worth almost a hundred grand now and you know exactly the same thing happened with Bitcoin I had many people a lot of them expat insider a seminar attendees say to me Johnny I got ten grand. What should I invest it in? I'd say Bitcoin. I said that when it was at 60 I said it when it was a hundred. I said it when it was 200 I said it when it was 800 and a thousand and on and on again Very few people took that advice and still even these days people ask me all the time Johnny. I've got five or ten grand What should I invest in? Hey, and I'm no financial analyst
[15:08] But again, like I said, I've been lucky in most things anyway except in love and with the stock market That's why years ago when I got Nick for ten grand back in the 90s I vowed I'd never get in the stock market again, and I did and I sure as hell wouldn't get into it now It's the biggest bubble imaginable. So then what do I say to people? I say look I think everyone should own at least one Bitcoin. That's not gonna break the bank. What's it at? 11 or 12,000 right now So by all means get one Bitcoin and if you've got a lot of assets put 5% in Bitcoin or other cryptos But ten or twenty percent in gold and silver ten or twenty percent in cash Just in case your bank shuts down or the ATMs quit working or there's a big hack in the financial system
[15:54] All that crazy stuff will happen You know then put ten or twenty percent into foreign lands or properties so that it's outside the reach of the US government Oh and about the cash I'd say keep five ten or twenty thousand dollar Whatever you can afford in actual bills not in a safety deposit box. Never put anything in a safety deposit box But do put some cash in an easily accessible place in your own home personally right now. I'm afraid of banks They're all teetering. You know, they're on the edge of collapse. The only life support system. They have is the Fed I mean look they're all so loaded down with trillions of dollars in derivatives and other crazy ass Investment vehicles you and I could never understand. That's just a recipe for an eventual total collapse So personally, I would have a lot of money on any first world bank though
[16:40] Believe it or not. This is gonna sound strange most third world country banks Even though the term third world scares the hell out of people they think collapse and stability bad management The fact is most third world banks do not allow derivatives in their portfolio Which makes most of them more stable and resistant to collapse then most all first world banks who are carrying giant Multi-trillion dollar derivative positions, but you knew that already, right? So I'm not against having cash in a Latin American bank as long as your lawyer is vetted that bank out It's always a couple of really good solid ones, you know and more than a handful of crap ones in every country you know up in the states everybody thinks their bank is immune from collapse because the Fed and the FDIC are gonna cover you and All that when in effect that kind of psychological ploy gives you the depositor a false sense of security
[17:30] While the banks themselves can remain completely reckless because they're thinking the feds are gonna support them if they go down Whereas in Latin America, there is no Fed and their equivalent FDIC insurance coverage for depositors is quite small One of the best ways to judge a third world bank is to see how long they've been around and of course find out who owns That bank if the board of directors just consists of a bunch of faceless bureaucrats money, man I'd say forget about it but if the board of directors and or owners happen to be principals in a huge agricultural or Commodities business like pineapple coffee sugar cement, etc Chances are a bank like that is very conservative and strong Especially if it's been around 50 to 75 years or so That means it's weathered all kinds of terrible financial storms including World War two the Cold War the big
[18:22] 1973 oil embargo the 2007 and 8 real estate and banking blowout and certainly a couple of Linux attacks and devaluations of their own currency not to mention if you have some dough not a lot of dough But some dough in a foreign bank as long as they don't have a branch bank in the US Your dough is completely shielded out of the reach of any lawsuits or actions against you Including any actions from the US government as opposed to the situation where you had money in a US bank Any day and at any time the feds your creditors a private lawsuit can lock up your door and make it inaccessible To you with just a phone call In fact, I've heard that story firsthand from quite a few gringos and expats In fact is up in states everyone knows someone who's had that happen to him for one thing It seems to happen every time you're going through a divorce going through an IRS audit
[19:09] Or if you've been sued for any reason and if you're a business owner with a partner and you're going through a breakup Chances are along the way. Someone's lawyer in the process will lock up your accounts I wonder how many you listeners out there have gone through it yourself Well way back when even 30 years ago when I was living in the States it happened to me And that was before the internet before big brother knew your every move and had his dirty fingers and everything Oh and this might be of interest to all you guys and gals coming down to my next expat insider seminar in January And it should be of interest to anyone who's got their plan B in motion too because you know You're gonna need boots on the ground for whatever Destination you pick in your plans to get the hell out of dodge now every couple of days I check on airline flights and prices and man. I'm telling you day by day. They're all over the place
[19:54] In fact, just when I check a price, let's say from New York or Houston to Guatemala City or Panama City I'm seeing five hundred six hundred eight hundred a thousand dollars with the price heavily dependent on how long the layover is For example from Houston to Guatemala City or Panama City There's usually a layover in Mexico City or my jammy and if it's only an hour or two The round-trip flight could be eight hundred to a thousand bucks Whereas if the layover is six or seven or eight hours the flights could drop to five or six hundred bucks However, because almost no one's flying and the airlines are therefore dying I've been seeing a strange phenomena a day or two after I check the flight I said check the flight not book one. I get an email from obits travel acid II cheap air Whatever asking if I like to pick up where I left off on the search because you've got some great new deals
[20:44] And believe it or not if you jump in there right away Some of those flights are 20 30 even 50 percent less than they were on the earlier search Alright now an article that should really pique your interest The title is attention broke Millennials round-trip airfare has never been lower in short The article says the transportation security administration TSA Hmm. I never thought to check what TSA means. Have you I always thought it meant tough a Whole all right, so I was wrong though. Correct. I'm sure in the underlying attitude of the agency So anyway in this article the TSA is saying the flow of passengers through airports is 70% less Than it was pre cove idiot And because airlines are going broke even with the giant stimulus package the Fed can't bail these guys out forever and unbelievably
[21:36] Most airlines are now posting some fantastic round-trip deals starting later this month. For example, New York City to my Jimmy 27 bucks round-trip New York to Atlanta 27 bucks New York to Dallas 27 New York to LA 47 bucks. Are they desperate or what? They have to keep those planes filled and that's good news for you In fact right now I'm looking at the travel map for round-trip flights in the US from Friday August 28th to Monday, August 31st. I see New York to Dallas 50 bucks New York to Portland round-trip 130 bucks. New York to Houston 27 bucks. It's just amazing. That's why it's good to check these sites every day or two You're bound to run into one of these great deals In fact, there's a brand new fantastic tool to find the lowest round-trip air fares in the world
[22:24] Well, I don't know if it's brand new, but I just found it. It's out of MIT It's called the great escape tool. Just send me an email the expat files at gmail.com and I'll send you the direct link I'm on it right now. For example, I just put in New York to Central America I stuck in the dates November 4th through November 18th And I see there's a round-trip flight from New York to Guatemala City for 264 bucks and now I'm plugging in the dates from my Exped Insider seminar January 8th through 14th Actually, I'll plug in two days early and two days after for some boots on the ground leeway time And I'm picking O'Hare field in Chicago to Guatemala City and it's 364 bucks Man, this tool is great and it gives you all the Covidiot warnings for the airports and countries you're flying in and out of send me an email the expat files to gmail.com
[23:13] And i'll give you the link man. This really is the best airline cost flight link i've ever found It's so easy to use even a moron like bush jr. Could figure it out. Well, maybe not But then again, i'm a glass half full kind of guy That said I get lots and lots of emails and I generally get two or three a week from my favorite deposed Nigerian prince and those guys got all those millions locked up in bank accounts All they need is a guy like me to partner up with hey, I told you I was lucky Oh, and I get a steady trickle of emails from middle eastern guys, too They too seem to have tons of money locked up in bank accounts in places like Qatar and other places I can't spell and all they need is a partner like me Told you I was lucky I get all kinds of emails from guys with names like Ali Sharif Imadadi. How'd I get so lucky?
[24:03] You know with all these offers i'm seriously considering giving up on this podcasting thing I think, you know, my destiny is hanging with muslim sheikhs Not podcasting. So if at any time you tune into the expat files and i'm no longer there I just might be an Abu Dhabi guest of Ali Sharif token a hookah second down champagne and lounging in a gold-plated jaguzzi Yep crackers and caviar 24 7 served up by russian harem girls for some that's just what the doctor ordered But I don't much like caviar. So I guess for now i'll skip it All right, then comes this email from mr. Amby says ola johnny. Hope you're doing well Just in case he says any of your listeners are still undecided as to the ethics Of socialist latin american dictators. Check this out. Then he sends me a link to an article out of panama
[24:51] Entitled bolivian courts investigate evil moralis' affair with a 14 year old His starts and i'll paraphrase this the former president of bolivia started a relationship with a 14 year old girl when he was in office Authorities are now analyzing photos videos and conversations involving the tryst Then it says evil moralis has at least five open Investigations against him now and if that weren't enough he's added one more romance with a minor The young girl whose full name is neomi menses. Chavez was only 14 years old when the romance began according to a 46 page Secret police report containing photographs and compromising conversations. All right. Here's the dirt and it's dirt according to authorities The relationship began five years ago
[25:37] So the woman is now 19 and can talk By the way, the crime of statutory rape in bolivia carries a penalty of three to six years in prison Then it says one of the pieces of incriminating evidence that just came out is a video that neomi menses the lady sent to the former president Congratulating him and herself on their fifth anniversary as a couple the video is now being circulated heavily on twitter Hey, I watched it. It's in spanish and man, is she passionate about their affair? Wow Oh, then how'd he get caught? Well, it says on july 7th just last month authorities began their investigation Alarm bells were set off when three people were arrested in an official government vehicle with false registration numbers Turns out neomi menses and her sister were passengers in that vehicle and that arrest started a chain of events
[26:27] First thing she did was send a what's up message She sent it to evil moralis to warn him that she'd been arrested surprise surprise within hours She her sister and another person were released in following up the case authorities found that she had evo's personal phone number authorities also found 348 missed messages to her from evo Along with photographs showing both of them in the ex-president's personal office and residence Moreover, they found records of air tickets for the young woman to mexico and argentina to visit moralis during his political asylum With her itinerary matching up perfectly with the dates on which he was initially in mexico after his resignation And later in argentina where he's been residing ever since december 12. Hmm. That's strange
[27:13] Why isn't he holed up in my jammy along with the dozens of other fugitive scumbags sociopathic politicians and narcos? Why not? My jammy is all the rage with fugitive scumbags That makes you wonder how many times he may have flown with bill clinton on the lolita express I guess we'll find out You've been listening to the expat files living in latin america If you need some help with your own plan B We can schedule a one-on-one phone or skype consult Just send me an email the expat files at gmail.com And if you want to get on the waiting list for my next week long expat insider seminar in central america Where you're guaranteed to get a two to five year head start on your plan B Send me an email the expat files at gmail.com No spambos
